I recently purchased a stock 1972 FJ40 tool box lid. I plan on installing it under the driver's seat of my 73. I plan on building a custom seat bracket/frame since I am currently using seats from a Geo storm and don't have the factory seats or framework any longer. I like the stock look and Land Cruiser heritage of the lid but will build my own box.
I've actually never seen one in a rig up close. Did the stock seat flip forward or backward to allow access to the box, or did you just slide the lid out with the seat slid back to allow access?
I'm thinking of having the seat hinge forward and the rear of it flip upward, then get some gas shocks from a rear hatch type door to hold it up while I access the tool box. I would like to have the lid on a hinge for quick access. I think I can turn the box 90 degrees from the stock position so it won't stick out toward the driver's feet as much.
Any ideas comments or suggestions? I know to some of you this will seem like a lot of work but it will make my cruiser truly unique and give me a little more secure storage.
