Good day all,

I have a relatively new to me '76 FJ40. I ran it for my first summer (last year) with the top on but am determined to go topless this summer. With no AC I think this is required!

I have been looking at tailgate options (e.g. SOR, CCOT, Ebay, etc.) out there but am curious on actual reviews, recommendations from these (or other) options.

Not looking for something custom and don't need to color match this year (although not against it longer term).

I did try searching but really saw more discussions about adding a drop down tailgate vs something to run when you have your top off.

What tailgate are you running with the top off? Picture to show what I am working with!

Cut a piece of sheet metal down to fit the opening....about $25

I had a large piece of aluminum diamond plate that I cut for the opening. I unbolted the amby doors from the hinges and bolted it on that way. If Real Steel ever opens back up for business, I'll be ordering their stock looking drop down tailgate. I've been running a panel across the back for decades and I'm tired of it.

Made my own that folds down for about $50! 2 pieces of 1/4" diamond plate welded smooth sides together with a small inner notch for the 76+ tub. Made my own hinges too and use the lower ambulance door hinge to secure it upright. This thing is plenty strong enough to hold up two fat adults when extended. Not OEM but works for me. Fun and easy project, I just had to hire a pro TIG welder as I don't trust my aluminum welding skills. ✨

I went with the aquala ambulance tailgaite not long ago. I have the 4plus tire&basket so drop down would be the functional unless swung all the way out.

haven't installed it -

Blank steel panel bolted into the existing ambulance door hinge points, painted up with rattle can to match the Mustard 532. Looks nice and does the job, Kevin’s fold down looks great but I’m tall and having the fixed panel has been no big deal. I’m a tired old man so I’ll add a pic tomorrow.
