I want to put outside frame headers on a small block chevy for my 1974 fj40-does anybody know which headers to use---Thanks-mariah

mmmm.....I had a set of those, absolutely hated and despised them.....ditched them cheap about 10 years ago.... Not even sure who carries them anymore, since no one recommends running them....

I then ran $100ish block hugger headers from Summit Racing...no complaints Single 3" exhaust.

Currently, I run ram's horn cast GM center dump manifolds, and by far like them the best. Single 2.5" exhaust, improved low end due to correct backpressure. (3" was too big)

If you like cooking everything under your hood, tightening the bolts attaching them to the heads everyday and replacing them every couple years due to rusting out I would highly recommend them. There are a set of Rams Horns in the for sale section righ now.

Listen to woody!

I had a set of those headers for about 5 years- they suck. Let me explain why I didn't like them.....

With the header on the outside of the frame, your exhaust also has to be outside the frame. The best bet then is to dump the exhaust right out in front of the rear tire. Now the lowest point is the exhaust tip, and trust me, you will find out how low it is. I broke the tips off my exhaust multiple times, and after a while you don't have much material to weld on to get them back in place.

I just run junk yard exhaust manifolds. I tried some block huggers, but my steering wouldn't let them fit, and I didn't want to mess with it anymore. I run a single 3" exhaust, and the tip dumps out on the side behind the driver rear tire. I had the muffler shop make the last couple feet removable. I undo 2 bolts and slip the tip off so I don't mash it when I am wheeling, but I don't have to smell the exhaust either when I am just on the road.

Good luck.

I have a set of those that came off my 78 FJ40. I forgot I ran those for a couple years. Everything those guys are saying is true.

I would buy a couple burritos from the gas station in the mornings before a long trail ride when I was getting gas. I would toss them in the back of the glovebox and about 2 hours later they were nice and hot, to hot at times to eat.

My set is hanging on the wall of my storage building in Arkansas. Im sure they will find their way mounted on the side of a BBQ grill one day, Because that is just about all they are good for.

Just my .02

To answer the question: I bought a set of those from Downey. I think they were made or sold by Advanced Adapters.

Unlike the rest of the folks I liked how they worked and had no problems with them... I recommend a set of header bolts (Stage 8 makes a nice set) and dead soft copper or aluminum gaskets. The other thing I did to help sealing was to "dent" the tubes next to the flange so I could use a 6 point socket and a ratchet to tighten the bolts.

As others have pointed out your results may vary. :D

i also run the outside the fram headers and hasnt bothered me. to each his own i guess

I also run the outside headers with no problems. My exhaust is tucked up tight and has never dragged, even when high-centered on the frame. When I redo the steering after the SOA, I will probably run block-huggers or ramshorns, just to keep it all inside the framerails.

By the way, the headers are from Advance Adapters, and purchased from Specter.

my 78 Came with these outside the frame creations that apparently necessitated removing part of the inner fender, they had several holes in them by the time i got them, and cracks from bad exhaust hangers. I sandblasted them and welded them up, but I really don't like that they cut the body to make them fit, when I do a power steering swap, I'm going to stock manifolds.

i'll add to the don't waste your money crowd. had em on my first cruiser and was not impressed. you hack away your fender, changing plugs sucks, they're expensive.

if you don't want to go ramshorn, go with shorty headers.

I suggest you look at this thread:

I am putting on ram horns because the outside the outside the frame headers are horrible. I will just throw mine away, they are terrible. Go with block huggers or ram horns.
