I am original owner of 1978 FJ40. Replaced the leaking mechanical fuel pump with a Toyota mechanical fuel pump. It does not consistently pump fuel to the factory carb. I can be driving for a few days, week or month and then it dies and will not start up until it sets for at least 6 hours. Not sure why this happens. Thinking of changing to an electric fuel pump. I have a Carter High Performance electric fuel pump md P4594. It puts out 7 psi. Is 7 psi too strong for the factory carb? Will it work for my FJ40? Greg

Just thinking out loud: It might be a simpler solution if you were able to diagnose the issue with your current mechanical fp. I assume that you changed out the fuel filter. Up stream from the fp, is the fuel line clear? Tank properly vented, etc. Good luck...

I have a 72 FJ40.. It was a year specific fuel pump due to the gas line fitting. I changed over to an electric fuel pump in the mid 80's. I have run some high $ pumps and currently run $10 (4 to 7psi) ones off ebay. They last for years and I use them for fuel transfer units I make for friends.

I have a Rochester 2 barrel, Delco distributor and a man-a-fre header. More or less came that way when I got it in 82.

Not the expert but some years have a spacer, in addition to the gasket. Could it be this is not installed? I just rebuild my 76 FJ40 mechanical pump and it works very well now. My year does not have a spacer.
There is a filter before the pump, and in my case, I added a cheap transparent filter after the pump so I can see if the pump is doing its thing.

- i will give your other correct answer you need right now , you mention " Thinking of changing to an electric fuel pump. I have a Carter High Performance electric fuel pump md P4594. It puts out 7 psi. Is 7 psi too strong for the factory carb? "
- your correct answer is " the Carter High Performance electric fuel pump md P4594 is too strong for the factory carb . It puts out 7 psi. and 7 psi is way too strong for the factory carb "
- yes , @Tara your correct , a EFI fuel pump , and a oem toyota Carburetor without a return line do not work , i agree that's a POOR CHOICE ,,,,
- i agree , the oem 1978 factory Pump , along with a new OEM Revised update Fuel Filter , is BEST possible solution here , also the new UPDATED mounting bolts are a MUST !

- your initial answer the question is spot on , ,
