I have a 78 Fj40 Ca. and was wondering if your male plug to the cooling fan relay looks like this, I'm not sure if there is a metal slat missing on the right side of the plug. Any pics from yours would be helpful, thanks

Did you replace your fan controller with a working OEM unit or did you replace it with an aftermarket one? I'm still trying to repair mine and have considered building an analog or digital drop-in replacement.

I found one at Spector Off Road. Used working unit. Not cheap but plug and play. i tried to clean mine up but it would not work. It is amazing to me that this is the most advanced circuitry on these....almost like they gave it to the nerdy intern to figure out how to keep the fan funning until the temp got to some level or at most 30 min and not to come on unless the temp was at a certain level.
I think fast eddy answered your question. I'm on the road heading to the FJ Summit (yes, I said FJ- they let me in to see a real 4x4 in action.
). So I can't help you out for about a week.

I still have the original fan relay, just wanted to see if your plug looked the same way, thanks fast eddy for the info. Does the fan need 12v? I tested it and had 8.4-8.7 v power to the fan. Not sure if this is why it will not turn on unless directly jumped from the battery. I have another relay and will try it out this week.
Finally the carb fan is working, got a used oem fan cooling relay, plugged it in drove around for a while, came home and shut it off and there she blew. Glad this part of working on the 78 40 is done. I will test the old oem relay I have and repair the non working parts. Anyone who needs one let me know I will have my oem hopefully repaired by the end of the month.

I am wondering if getting the fan working on my 77 will help the hot start issue. Most of the time I have to use the choke to start mine after coming out of the store or whatever when it is warm out. Fan works, just have not searched for the fuse or checked the relay.
My hard starts and the 2 minutes of rough idle instantly went away as soon as I got mine working. It might be worth hot wiring your fan on and get engine up to temp and see if it fixes your got start issue.
Were you able to repair your original relay? Because you have a CA '78 and your fan came on after driving, can I assume you have the original thermal reactor exhaust manifold? I have a CA '78 but with a CA-legal Downey header. Just curious if the fan would ever come on with a header and the temp sensor mounted in its original location.

seeing how this forum is a gold mine of info, I have an inquiry about the carburator cooling fan on my 1977 FJ40 Ca.
Specifically, where is the thermosensor on this model? I recently replaced the intake/exhaust manifold system and never located a manifold sensor. is this by any change the sensor that wraps around the upper part of the carburator?
I ask because the fan was working before my manifold rebuild but it has not come on since. the machine was idel for about 2 months. I was wondering if i missed something. I tested the fan with 12V DC and it spun happily.
Also, I know the fan is supposed to engage when the engine compartment reaches 175 and the area i am in is usually in the low to mid 70s.

your configuration is different from mine due to all the CA junk i am forced to have but I can see a number of common features. I do not remember seeing it on my replacement EGR stuff but it may still be mounted to the old stuff. I will poke around a bit. thank.

Located the sensor and poked around a bit and now the Warp Drive (as it is affectiately called) functions once more.
One quick question: where abouts is the cooling fan relay on a 77 CA located? for the life of me I could not locate it. Not important as it is working, but i like to know just in case.

The picture above is from an fj60 and it looks the same as my '78, so I'm thinking they're all about the same.
On the firewall, above the passenger's feet, behind the heater fan duct. The infamous 5a fuse is taped into the wiring harness right next to it. The original tape was yellow.

I located the relay last night but it was not as well-labeled as yours. just the serial number and model number. Therefore I was not sure what is was. you have confirmed my suspisions. I replaced the infamous fuse (blown of course) and the Warp Drive runs! thanks for the assistance.
