Decided to rebuild the Carb on my 81 2f. Carb had been soaking in the cleaner for a few days while I was waiting for Keyster kit in my mail.
Ready to put it back together and wanted to make sure I do it right. pictures attached for the questions below.

  • Main jet is smaller secondary is bigger i.e. 2.00?
  • Looking at the pic, secondary is the one on the left, d'oh?
  • In addition to the two main jets, i see a third Jet in the Kit where does tis go?

Thanks guys, since i took the power valve with the assembly I did not see it at that time.
Now, the next questions. I also found this bad boy in the kit, where does it go on the carb Haynes does not show this anywhere in the diagram?

uhaider, I wondering if your really capable of taking on this task.........

Thanks Pin Head.
grant5127, we will all find out in a few days :-). When there is a will there is a way...

Although I am putting the carb back now but I am now thinking the issue might be with the sticking PCV in the first place, forum had a lot of great info!!!

I am saying it is the PCV based on the fact that some days it starts up fine and idles like a champ, on other days it does not idle at all, regardless how hard i try.
While it never dies while cruzing (as long as I keep my foot on the gas) it is the same story, some days fine, somedays it feels it is running on three cylinders.

Do you think I am on the right track with the PCV?

spray some carb cleaner into it and clean it out until it rattles freely again.

Ya know,Shane, I thought the new Jet in that picture looked smaller than the original one.

I cleaned up the PCV but even prior it was clicking, could blow up, not down. So does not look like that was the issue. Carb is ready to be installed back, let’s see how that goes, did not find anything suspicious during the rebuild. will continue my quest, Will keep you posted. I realized how little the local mechanics know about the FJs and how great is this site!! Ih8mud ROCKS!!!

Carb back on, I just realized that the idle fuel solenoid is not working.
  • Did not hear it click when turning the vehicle on.
  • Did not hear it click when leaving the vehicle on and connecting and disconencting the soleneoid.
  • Did hear it click when conencting to the battery.
What to do now, Is there a fuse for it?

Ummmm - did you notice that, the old jet on the left (Brass) is a 150, and the new jet on the left (Brass) is a 125 ...?? That may not be what's causing the initial (idle fuel solenoid) problem, but, it will certainly affect performance.

Ditto on what Jim said. He rebuilt mine and I had the same problem. It would not idle. Grounded the wire he told me to and it worked fine after that.

Finally got back to my 40, could not locate my VOM but found out that both (- and +) were dead :hhmm: Tried to trace it, and as soon as i touched the emission control box, I heard a click. Wiggling the box continued to produce the clicking.
I took the box off, reconnected and put it back together, I could hear the solenoid click now.
Tried started wo the air cleaner and it kept dying in seconds. Fired up as soon as the cleaner went back on and kept idling after that... After 3 weeks http://images.ih8mud.com/images/smilies/bounce.gif

So to recap and close the thread.
It was not the PCV or Carb, it was the solenoid not kicking in.
Why it idled some days and not the other? -> lose connection in the emission control box.
Why the overall performance is sluggish some days -> Perception?

Thanks All, I could not have done it without you guys.

You can eliminate that troublesome solenoid by snipping the tip off just below the o-ring.......
