FJ40 build

Hey guys, well I am ready to start on my 40 build. I have recently purchased a dana 60 front and a 14 bolt FF rear for my project. I want to 4-link the front and SOA the rear with plans to 4-link the rear later, when the budget gets more funding. I have heard that it is better 3-link the front or maybe just easier? Not sure yet on the overall length I will stretch it to yet, but it will be stretched to maybe 102" or 106", somewhere around there. I want some flex, more than a leaf spring will offer so I am going to do coil springs in the front, need help with the type to use, I read that some F150 springs are good as well as Explorer springs, even some Aero Star Springs, just not sure what would be the easiest and best. Use of vehicle will be 90% off road and 10% road. No major commutes, just a quick trip to the fuel station maybe, less than 2 miles.

The 40 has a SBC 350 so it is a little lighter than the original pig that was in it. Thoughts or suggestions?

Here is where I am at the moment:

A double triangulated 4 link in the front would eliminate the need for a panhard. I don't think you'd lose any flex, but it would be tougher to fit it with the motor up in there.

Thanks GLTHFJ60, any positive suggestion are always appreciative.

Matthew, I'll be there today until maybe 7 then I have to pick my sister up at the airport. I'll be there on Friday. Just give a call before hand. No real progress just cleaning the axles up and the barn floor.

I think rear would be much easier to link than the front just for clearance.

Still cool.

3 link + panhard at front coz It's just more easy clear engine oil pan with 3 link and keep it low stance ..

Tires that are you ready to run and terrains where you usually go .?

There is plenty of info about links, suspension frequency and GC ( instant center ) to be read ..

have fun !

Edit: another vote to start with the rear keeping spring packs in front ..

I agree the rear will be a lot easier to link, but I want the front done first, why set up the steering twice. I'm not far, but it seems that you would have to change the steering?
Tire size is 39.5 Iroks to start, most likely will go to a 42" Iroks later on. Terrian; mostly extreme, the guys I wheel with have 40" to 49" tires, one tons to rockwells to unimogg axles, rocks, logs, hills all types of terrian, the fun stuff.

...because John's not sure about how all the geometry will work yet and if He does SOA in front with mechanical linkage and then goes 3 or 4 link and full hydro later, he will have done it twice.

His brother has a full 4-linked, dual steering 'Mog 416-axled buggy with 49" iroks (I think)

Thanks Matthew, yeah Mike has an awesome buggy. Matthew is correct on the full 4-link, dual steer with full hydro, 49" Iroks, and the axles are 419s. Mike will be helping me along the way. He said we would try it and see what happens, he and Matthew both have a good idea of what I want and a great depth of knowledge to offer.

Opened the 14 bolt I purchased to find the support bearing had exploded, so I will just leave the rear out of the picture for now until I get another one. To the front I go, will be mocking the front axle up on jack stands for height and moving it forward a bit. Will post pics soon. Thanks

Keep her going bro I'm watchin might be doing similar build here in awhile

I read a thread where someone took a 14 bolt and cut the tube to make it offset. He cut both sides and just made the driver side the long side and used both stock shafts.
Here is his thread, great info in there; https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/221512-freds40-builds-60-a-30.html

What I am thinking is to cut the long side, passenger side by 6" and then using short shafts, 32" on both sides. Any thoughts?
