I've been to the mtb trails before but wanted to explore a little more in the LC. Have a long weekend planned in the area this weekend; staying at Yogi Asheboro but will be driving down to bike and explore. Bone stock '96 FZJ80 with Toyo Open Country tires (probably 10yrs old) and I'll be by myself so I'm not going to hit the moderate or difficult trails this trip. Anything noteworthy to hit while I'm exploring around? Was considering Wolfden / Falls dam area but not tied to anything specific. I'll probably hit the shooting range, appears to be $10 day pass, anything else to note there??

Thanks for any help! An because the internet is for pics...

I'd think twice about taking that truck on even the easy trails with that bike hanging off the back. With no lift and on stock sized tires it's just asking for trouble...really expensive trouble.

Yeah, my lx450 would drag the trailer hitch all over the place before I removed it. It would even drag after I put my lift on my truck.

Good catch on that one. That would have been a very expensive mistake.

Get your range pass at the Eldorado Outpost where you’ll also get your trail pass. It’s a long way back from the range if you forget (they don’t sell them at the range).
Thanks for the head's up!! I had planned to hit Eldorado but probably wouldn't have thought to get a range pass there.

Yes, my OneUp rack would definitely not be making the trip. And with no skids or sliders, I'm definitely not looking to tear anything up on the truck either. Is that trail do-able on a stock LC? I watched some YouTube videos of Wolfden last night and just want to make sure I'm not in over my head for a first trip.

Thanks for all the feedback...

Wolf Den / Falls Dam are doable in a stock 80 if it's dry. If it is wet, there are some slick spots that can get you in trouble if you are not really careful. I would try to buddy up with somebody in another truck just in case. You should carry a tow strap at the absolute bare minimum.

To quote my father "Those that go in the woods alone and unprepared for self rescue deserve to spend the night in the woods."

Don't go alone.

Uwharrie has been awesome... biking, shooting and exploring!! I saw this route on the Carolina 4Runners page and they said it was stock 4runner capable:
553 to Flatwoods Trailhead
96/Falls Dam up to and past soup bowl
*R* onto 89/Wolf Den (*L* at first fork to stay on 89)
*R* onto 79/Slab Pile
*L* onto 93/Saw Mill
continue onto 92/Rocky Mtn. Loop

I did go alone but there were tons of people on the trail. I committed to turning around if there was any doubt about being able to make it. I think I got most of the way through 96/Falls Dam, there was a sharp/steep Left and a big rock pile to go up/over. I decided against it and turned around. Passed 2 SWEET 100's right there and turned around and followed them out. I had a blast a have a better idea of what I want in my cruiser now. I hit tons of FS roads and found some cool campsites. Biking again tomorrow morning and heading home Monday. Thanks for all the suggestions!!! I look forward to coming back again soon a little more prepared.

I've got to do something about that 80 driver seat though. Probably going to try the WitsEnd extender to get it to go back some more; my back was KILLING me when I got back to camp.

I was so close to bottoming-out on a lot of the erosion mounds but made it over all of them clean with stock springs/tires...

FYI a pair of airbags can get you 3 inches of rear lift for 100$

It has the stock shocks/springs... 215k so it's time they get replaced any way. Not going crazy so 2-2.5" should be good. Now the big question: OME, Dobinson, Slinky or something else???

A set of OME heavies or even mediums are a great way to go without breaking the bank. All depends on what you want and your long term goals. As far as leg you just removing the dead pedal makes a ton of difference. Sounds silly I know but at 6'3 I definitely notices a little more space when I did. but a huge thumbs up to Joey at Wits end. Good dude with solid products.

I'm 6' 3" as well and seriously considered selling to get a 100. I love this thing but it's not tall person friendly... Do you have a procedure to remove the dead pedal? I don't think this is really $142 worth of metal but if it works it could be worth $500 to me. I need to order the Gamviti gears to do at the same time as well. The leather is shredded so might as well get them covered while they're out too...

Success at the range but failure on the trail

91-92 manual cloth seats make all the difference. Even I could drive it pretty comfortably across the country. I was always surprised at the lack of leg room in the later ones.

Ouch. I wore a T bruise on my chest one summer from a failed carbon bar. Hope that didnt sting too bad.

No real procedure. it's just one bolt and pop it out. Sucks about the bike but glad you had fun overall.
