When doing swapping the transmission hoses, should I drain all the fluid from the trans drain plug, do all the swaps, and refill?

Or should I wait till I can run the engine and do all of this then so I can do it while it's hot?
I'd just disconnect the hoses, see how much fluid drains out and add that much back in after the new hoses are installed.

Sounds like a plan. Already lost some fluid when pulling from the radiator so will be a little bit of guesswork, but I think it was less than a cup or two so not crazy.

Got some of the transmission hoses on, but some are just getting stuck and not going all the way in. Using Gates 27059 (3/8") - any suggestions for getting em on? Already put transmission fluid on em but still not budging, saw someone say heat em up, does that mean like a heat gun at 700 degrees or something?

If you have a heat gun that would work, just keep it far enough away. I think I laid mine on a halogen shop light to warm them up.

Sounds good I'll do that, no nice shop lights for me ha

Got all of the trans hoses plugged except for these two ends - spent an easy half an hour on each, no amount of trans fluid and heat made them go in more a 1/4" past the ring. I'll try again this weekend, these things are stubborn.

May redo the bottom one outside the engine bay behind the headlights, think I used too much heat and it's looking pretty gnarly.

I used bacon fat from the breakfast cook up…..worked great. A little piggy goes a long way.

I finally got em, just spent like 4 hours pushing, taking a break, pushing hah. A few are a little bit short (1/4" - 1/2") in front of the rib, but I couldn't do much else to get em in.

Just did the same, what a PIA. I used a hot plate and pot of boiling water in the end. Wet the male end with tranny fluid... I did find the radiator cooler inlet line (90 deg bend) available at Partsouq and got it.

Was also glad I got extra hose, gave me a couple extra tries on the rough ones.

Just about finished! Really just gotta reset the throttle/acceleration cables since I pulled them all the way, I'm sure that will be fun. Got a few screws left that I dunno where they go, but pretty sure they're all for battery holder + EGR.

Getting way too hot to be outside for 6 hours at a time, I'll finish up tomorrow and put fresh coolant + transmission fluid in tomorrow (and buy a new battery, killed my old one no idea how).

One question on refilling transmission fluid - how do I know what type of fluid the PO used? I know just by pulling the drain plug I wouldn't even get all of it, so should I just fill it up with some reasonable fluid and hope it's fine? Or is it more like coolant where mixing is no good?

Why not pull one of the transmission lines and pump the old stuff through? I took the outlet line off at the steel tube and put 18" of 3/8" clear vinyl tube on and had a helper run the car for a few moments until I got 2 quarts out, then added 2 quarts to the fresh stuff in the pan and repeated until I could see the difference in color between new and old. I went through 6.3 quarts from the pan drain and fill plus 8 quarts flushing through the system. After checking the dipstick, I took it for a 8-9 mile drive and topped off (I was actually just below full).

That's a pretty solid idea, I like it. Only thing is, if you replaced the trans hoses, how are you fitting 3/8" vinyl tube through 3/8" trans hoses? Feel like it should probably be smaller, no?

Not certain it was tubing I had laying around looks like 3/8" ID, slipped right on the metal tube towards the pax side of the car. You could probably skip the tubing and take it right out of the pipe end but the spurts might end up on the floor. If you are taking it out of the hose, you would need a barb or simply point the hose in a bucket.

Either way it is a two person job - one to start-stop the car and the other to manage the fluid.

I wouldn't worry about the transmission fluid until the engine is up and running. When it comes time to add or replace the fluid go with Valvoline Maxlife ATF, easy to find and works great.

Once the engine is warmed up you can check the fluid level, park on a flat surface and leave the engine idling with the AC off.

Makes sense, I'll probably skip the tubing and practice my aim.

It was the "last" thing I planned on doing, but yeah honestly probably best to focus on the more immediate stuff (like coolant flush). Will work to get it running today!

So I got it running (fuel filter wasn't screwed in so took me some time to figure that one out). Engine sounds way better, seems pretty solid to me. All the codes are gone, no CEL, seems quite solid. Only issue is a boatload of white smoke out the back.

Strange thing about the smoke, it smells very different, kinda like oil but not really, definitely different than what it was when I first started. Also, there is no coolant in right now, it's filled with distilled water. Not quite sure, timing is definitely off so I'll fix that tomorrow, but wondering if maybe it's just clearing out some gunk or excess fuel and I ought to just let it run for 5-10 minutes. Not quite sure what to do with this one, my buddy things its a HG but that makes no sense, compression was wonderful and so was leakdown.

Awesome that it's running, but this one still seems to remain from day one of when I got this car. For what it's worth, no smell of gas anymore, but the gas is way thicker than it was before I did all of the work.

Exhaust Smoke:

I just googled “good compression white smoke” and it said transmission vacuum modulator. Specifically, a bad auto-transmission vacuum modulator can allow transmission fluid to be sucked into the combustion chamber and blow white smoke… May be something to dig into.
