been troubleshooting weird overheating symptoms, at highway speeds its all good, sometimes runs a little hot so I turn on the heater for a few minutes to cool it down. but then as soon as I get off the highway and slow down it spikes to red. ive changed the thermostat, the waterpump Is not leaking and my radiator appears to be fine. so I think its the fan clutch not engaging the fan once I slow down from highway speeds. Do I need the OEM part or will a good part from Napa do? if so where should I get this part from. I live in camp Pendleton CA, any advice?

asisn fan clutch ok, toyota fan clutch ok... You should clearly hear the fan clutch engaging in hot temps (roaring type noise under the hood)...

Spikes could also be other problems, does the fuel gauge spike as well, also have you actually tested the temperature with a laser heat gun etc.

Aisin FCT017 is the OEM, and it's actually the same price as the OE Toyota, from a discount dealer. Get either one but don't get other aftermarket brands that are out there. Not as good.

You can also rebuild your fan with the silicon gel. I thought there was a write up in the FAQ pages?

You might have an air pocket, from a bad cap. Try doing the burp thing, run it with the cap off (don't go anywhere) and add fluid when it sucks down. Run till all the burping air comes out with the rad full.

See if there is air. If you do see a bunch, that might be the issue.

What do you mean when you say "radiator appears to be fine"? I've had radiators that look just fine end up being shot.

On a different note, when I was younger and poor, I didn't really have the money to replace my marginal radiator. I used Water Wetter from Redline Racing. That stuff really works. Got me through until I could scrape up the money to fix it right.

I had the same symptoms about a year ago with my 60. Replaced the fan clutch with one that has a lifetime warranty from Oreilly's. Hasn't gone out yet and it fixed my problem.

It sounds like the fan clutch, with it being more affected by the speed variation but that does not totally rule out a radiator going bad.
By the way I'm glad to see u ended up with a 60. This is the AC that used to work with your dad. Feel free to give me a call your dad has my number.

thanks for the suggestions, im gonna try and put a fan clutch on it this weekend, and yes my gauges are un reliable, so I want to put a set of autometer mech gauges on there. does anyone happen to have the part number for that aisin fan clutch so I can ask parts stores over the phone and insure they have the OEM part im looking for. Weasel its good to hear from you, ill call soon, work keeps me so busy.

rock auto on the web is a good source for many parts and even amazon has some things. Local stores stock few hard parts for LC.
