Is it only the blue hub fan clutch that can be modified with heavier fluid? mine has a black hub. Is there a good replacement? AC is kicking off in 100 plus days on slow climbs.

Thanks

You are getting seriously hot if your AC is kicking off. I can suggest that some PM on your cooling system is order. It could be that your fan clutch is the only thing that has failed, or it could be a series of issues (for instance, a clogged rad). Several threads on folks with cooling issues to provide additional info on this.

If your fan clutch has not actually failed (and you are getting that hot), then modding your clutch may simply mask a portion of your remaining problem(s) that still need to be addressed.

That being said, IIRC the OEM black clutch can be modified as well. Several threads on this out there.

Yep, what he said... sounds like you need to do some cooling system maintenance.

I've seen quite a few 80's that have rusty coolant, dont know why they are prone to this, but you should do a coolant flush, put in a new OEM thermostat, and either put in heavier fluid in the fan clutch, or buy a new blue hub. If this still doesn't help, then you'd probably look into buying a new radiator.

Is your truck OBD2? If so, go ahead and buy an ultragage for $70 and see what your water temp is. AC kicking off means your getting too hot!! Take it as a blessing in disguise before you cause any damage.

considering he has a black hub fan clutch, I'd bet his truck is not OBDII :)

according to Tools R Us, you can go to 10K CST for the black hub clutch

I would go one step further and send Tools R Us your "best of the breed" old black fan clutch and have it juiced up and calibrated, and tested. No one knows these fan clutches better.

Yep. I just wanted to make sure the OP was treating the problem first, not the symptom.

I second the recommendation for an ultragauge or scangauge as well, assuming he does have OBDII.

some reaons I think it is just the clutch:

Never get hot at speed
If I drop a gear or two and raise rpms it cools down fast
fan turns very easy, one figure push when turned off even when warmed up.

Another question is this a good replacement: 16210-80FZ Fan Clutch 8/1992-1997 FZJ80 Shimahide (Japan) [from Man-a-free] Napa can geet me a whatever cheap but I want to do it right.

and any link to this Tool-r us fellow?

Yes hub looks Black

Thanks

I got my blue fan clutch from American Toyota. CDan or Sam Stewart should have one for you at a good price.

PM Tools R Us here on mud

If your clutch is rebuildable you cannot buy a better fan clutch today

I rarely see over 200° here in AZ with his mod'd clutch and mine is one step below a black Aisin
