I'm replacing the water pump on my 1978 FJ40 and I'm going to do the fan belt as well.
The belt that's on there is an old Mitsubishi that measures approx. 42" by 5/8". I can't seem to find a source for the actual size of the belt so I can replace it with an aftermarket one from a local auto parts shop. I'd rather go and get one than order one but if I have to I'll shop online.

What is the size of a belt for drive, alt, water pump for a 78 FJ40?

The stock 70-74 alt/fan belt is 17mm wide.

Toyota 99323-01060 (17mm x 1060mm)
or
Gates TR22416 (22/32"x 41.6")
or
Gates TR22420 (22/32x 42")

75-87 2F crank pulley, 2 17mm belt grooves.
75-78 2F WP pulley without fan clutch, 2 17mm belt grooves.
75-78 2F WP without fan clutch, without oil cooler.
81-87 2F alternator, internal electronic regulated.
75-87 2F alternator belt, no PS.

Much (all?) could be had used from fellow 'mudders.

Here Are pics of the belt on my 78. All stock stuff with fan clutch.

I was attempting to get the exact one factory specific for Toyota regardless of extra cost BUT EVEN THEY said well it shows about 4 different possibilities - and the kicker is they doesn’t have the dimensions on their system so it’s a guessing game - Not to mention if I have them order and ship they expect me to buy regardless - great customer service

I see you have until 74’ belt spec any assistance from 76-78 FJ.s? Also,
Where find those with correct dimension so I can replace and pray no squeaking in my rig after :)
Been dying gator get exact dimension and vendors .. would be doin me a solid ( if I have to use the 15mm wide - so be in - just wanted factory settings

Dimensions for a 76-78 belt sizes reference for me - if it’s the same as 70-74 which might not be the case. Hoping for some direction/clarification because of all the threads that speak to it go all over the place with thoughts.

Also vendors I’m not aware of, if u know of any / part numbers (the one in this past thread is no longer available and the worst thing is when I contacted Mr Toyota parts they acting like I had 4 options none of which had dimensions on their program, making me blind with decision. So rather than wasting and buying all - looking through and reading all the belt threads there isn’t a complete consensus. Help! Hehe —- thanks a mil❕❗

How’s the gates working out for you? Any noises?
Because I know the gates is 15mm not 17mm as previous posters suggested in other threads as well. I’m thinking of doing the same for my 76 fj40 , am trying to get rid of squealing

The dimensions for the belt are built into the 10-digit part number. Once you find a parts professional who understands the numbers, then getting one should be relatively easy.

The guy at Toyota said he needed my VIN to figure out and that gave him nothing because at Toyota they don’t show measurements and if I order I pay for it even if it doesn’t work .... also my previous owner slapped on random ones and I’m basically being a diehard about getting correct ones for my 76 fJ-40

But fantastic point I’ll be taking in with me to enlighten him

I'm not a parts professional but toyodiy.com shows me part number 90916-02047 with a length of 1275mm for the alternator belt. If that part number has been superseded a parts professional can tell you what the current number is.

The air pump belt is 90916-02046 with a length of 1105mm.

Both are 17mm wide, that part did not change from pre-74 to post-74.

Spoke to Mr. T and then NEW part numbers are as follows:

Fan belt: 99343-11265-77

Air pump belt: 90916-02046-77

Of course they don’t have any in stock literally anywhere so I’m going to have to look for the alternatives that are all 15mm wide

They say they have it in stock, and they are usually accurate. TPD has other issues but should be ok shipping a fan belt!

Here’s the main issue I think everyone runs into (as did I) - when Toyota and other auto parts stores run the search for a 1976 fj40 comes up with 3 different sizes for the alternator/fan belt and like 6 options for belts overall (because of various options the fj had) .. the 3 sizes are something like 41” 42.something” and then 43.something” - and they are all for the same year and the same part meaning all say alternator/fan v-belt

I have a question ... looking at my belts on my rig currently (ones still on there from the PO) and I’m ordering new ones. Obviously the above talked about issues were somewhat tough to overpass BUT....

here’s my question with pics...

looking at the pics of my rig you can see that one of the belts only goes from crank to (whatever that is it goes to air pump? But there is that gap next to the fan/alt belt middle portion ... But when ordering my new i has belts that goto the third point (as pictures at bottom where a belt could be but is not)
The pictures from the place I’m purchasing shows the belts as (I think) they should be (with the third point just at the fan/alt belt) .... anyone know why that is - SOOO do I need to duplicate or Was the PO on something or is that for a specific reason?? Or are the ones I ordered (A & B - respectively in regards to the company pics below) correct & I should have that air pump crank go to that third spot above in middle parallele to the alt/fan belt ?
