Mike what turbo are you running currently?

It's a Holset WH1C. It's a 12cm exhaust with a 46mm inducer on the compressor side and I currently have the wastegate wired shut.

My next updates will show what happened when I was running a 52mm compressor on this same turbo.

I thought I remembered that. You have a HE341 lined up next, right?

WH1C is pretty close to an HX35 IIRC.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'll have to add this to my list of things to do. I can easily get it to 1200. I typically cruise at 1000* doing 65-70 mph, but that's mostly cause I let off the pedal otherwise it would be higher. After that broken fuel line I'm overly paranoid about getting stranded somewhere remote so I'm trying to make the engine work within its comfort zone.

You would be better off turning down the fuel or up the boost to cool your EGT's. I do not see an issue with your EGT's to be honest. Also the smaller turbo you have will also show higher EGT's over a larger WH1C. You just need to dial in your fuel or boost to get your cruising EGT's where you are comfortable. Do not see any need to run much larger than 3" exhaust unless your are going with big compounds or just want 4".

I would not get to overly paranoid about the broken injector line, that's a relativly rare occurrence and was probably due to work harding from the dip stick being strapped to it.

Keep the updates coming Boots! Maybe one day I will be able to join you guys on your diesel road trips.

Cummins rates its motors to run at 1200* continuous, so running around 1000* is not a problem whatsoever, IMHO.

Johnny,

I don't doubt what you're saying, but where does Cummins state 1200 continuous. Everything I read and most of it opinion is to try to keep EGT between 600 and 800. If the 1200* continuous is true then I'll be really relieved.

Thanks for the reassurances, I'm just becoming really paranoid in my old age.

Boots,
I just replaced my tensioner last week, should have probably done the water pump too, but once you go down that road where does it stop.
BTW, Sorry if this was a hijack, Love the pics and the updates, keep em coming.

Alt. clutch or decoupler pulley-

I think the fixed alternator pulley vs. a clutch or decoupler type would reduce wear and tear on the belt and all the accessories while running, during rpm changes, start up and shut down. I am looking into the feasability of finding one and also seeing if I can get a 3 wire alternator with the right size pulley and higher amperage to fit without reconfiguring anything.. There are so many configurations!!!! I think this is why they recommend frequent replacement of the tensioner.
I didn't realize what the clutch type pulleys were until I had a bad one on a VW TDI.. I'm not sure why Cummins/'Dodge don't use them.

I can't remember if I did this before or after the Utah trip but I'll post it up now. It would make sense that I did it before a long trip.

I wasn't having any issues but went ahead and replaced the water pump. A 6bt pump is suppose to work so I ended up on ebay searching. I wanted to make sure I got a replacement with the shroud covering the fins as I think those are a little better for flow. Here's the one I found next to my original.

It's pretty easy to get to in my setup with electric fans.

This one was challenging to get right as there are several variations to the belt tensioner. I wanted to replace my replacement since it was squeaking again and I wanted to use a different brand than daystar (my replacement). I finally got one that was correct for my 4bt and here is the winner.

You can see on the backside how they machine off the nub depending on the application.

The all important part number. It's a gates brand.

P6100071.JPG

I also made a new mounting plate out of a little thicker material.

P6100070.JPG

No more squealing and coupled with a new radiator and water pump I dropped operating temps 5 degrees with better load cooling when hitting the hills.

Thanks for the tensioner part number. Mine is squeaking like crazy. I might as well do the water pump, too.

Trip report

I better get these posted while I can still say this happened this year.

We went to Cruise Moab 2013 and meet up in Utah with Dirtgypsy and his family to caravan out to Moab. The :princess: and I ditched our kids with a friend to enjoy some kid-free time. I've tried some different setting to enhance the photos a little bit since our camera has seen better days so all the following pics have been played with.

After we checked in to the event and our place we played in the Arches National Park.

We did some short hikes out to some of the attractions.

We opted to stay in a cabin at Moab Valley RV Resort. It was one of their large cabins and we were pretty happy with it. Lots of room, TV, small fridge, and clean. I'd go there again the next time we make it to Moab.

Trip Report

Our first wheeling day we went on Golden Spike. This was a pretty long trail and day and it covered a wide array of terrain and landscape that Moab offers so it was a good intro trail to the area for us.

There was a variety of vehicles on our run. A truggy, some 40s, a beautiful 45, our 60s, an 80, and an FJ cruiser. There were some brake issues that turned one pair around and off the trail. Then the silver FC Cruiser had a hard day with rear diff carnage and tire carnage. He did finish the trail even though a strap kept him going on the obstacles.

We were up on a ridge and able to look out in Arches National park. We barely scratched the surface of the park and definitely want to go back and do some hiking the next time we're out in Moab.

Dirtgypsy was just a little more to the left (driver seat) than I was and he won the amazing save of the day. It sure had all the intention of flopping him over but some quick work of the throttle and steering kept him upright. With our slow camera we only got the beginning and end of the scary move.

You can see his front driver tire getting ready to drop off the edge.

P5020358.JPG

Throttle and steering got all fours back on the ground.

What was your MPG on your trip?

I averaged right at 20mpg. There was a stretch on the way to moab that I pulled down 22.5mpg which proved to me that if I could keep my foot out of it I could get into the twenties. Since I don't keep my foot out of it I hover around the 19-20mpg mark and less when I'm really pushing it. With some adjustments I had made before the trip it was a pleasant experience to log 2200 miles behind the wheel.

Those are some really great pictures. Thanks for sharing them with us. What axles are you running?

On this trip I was running a C&C 14bolt in the rear and a FJ60 cruiser axle up front converted to 8-lug. I ran that setup for 2-3 years. I am currently in the process of swapping the front to a Dana60 due to a housing bend on the cruiser axle this fall so once I'm back on the road I'll be on one tons front and rear.

awesome pics Mike .. as usual it's always nice see your and Clint 60's in action .. !

Sadly this was the last trip these two rigs would be on since Clint sold his truck just this last month. I've only scratched the first day so I'll have more pics coming of Fin's n' things and Moab rim.

NO! Say it isn't so! Oh well, I knew Clint had something else in mind.. Nice pics- One of these days I'll go on a real vacation!!
Thanks again Mike for taking all of those hard knocks for the rest of us to learn by and the drive to keep pushing forward. Keep up the good work.
