I once knew a logging truck driver who had a BJ40 with a Fairey O/D. His around town midleage didn't change because he didn't use the O/D there, but highway mileage went from 27 miles/Imperial gallon to 32. Hauling his 20ft travel trailer between Vancouver BC and Prince George BC stayed at 20 mpg but it was 2 hours quicker. This is about 500 miles of mountains and hills. Apparently the advantage is not so much the 27% overdrive you get in 4thO/D, it is being able to split all the other gears. He said it was the nicest matched selection of gear ratios to engine torque output he had ever driven. On the other hand, some people I met in Australia said that if you drive it that way you could wear out one of the shafts, I think the transmission output shaft, in about 60,000 miles and it was then very noisy and might require replacemant of the shaft.
