Does anyone run one on their 80? I want to get an exhaust but don't want to spend that much. My friend runs a dump on his chevy truck sounds nice, and at the switch of a button he can make his car sound normal. Just wondering if their is any major downsides to using a dump? Help my gas mileage and I don't have to just disconnect the exhaust and reconnect it when I need.

exhaust gases are corrosive and can over heat any parts it contacts make sure your dump dumps off to the side not under the vehicle, of course the dump needs to be after the O2's but also needs to be far enough down stream that the vacuum side of the pulse will not draw fresh air across the O2 sensors

do you think it will actually save gas? I have my doubts, but would love to hear feedback if you do it

Well, I've heard that the discconected exhaust or free flow exhaust would help the gas mileage. I don't know the scientifics exactly but I have friends who have chevy trucks and jeeps who either disconnect it or run the dump. Sounds nice, and for some reason the smaller the engine the louder it is.

I'll give you some feedback when I do it. If I can find out the measurements for my exhaust somewhere... :slap:

A complete poseur waste of time and money. The FZE does not have a pleasing note. It is too smooth. It just drones. Your friends chevy sounds good because it has a V-8 with a nice uneven sound. Even then, it gets old to drive like that.
You are pushing a 5000 lb brick through the air. What kind of mileage gains are you expecting? 5%? More like 1 or 2%. So you gain 2 miles to the tankful. In exchange you get to piss of people who might remember your rig when they go to vote on the next land closure bill.

Do something else to attract attention to yourself, put neons or chrome on a jeep or something. Don't impact the sport negatively.

Spending a lot of cash to save a $100 a year in fuel doesn't make much sense. If you want efficiency sell your cruiser and buy a Prius or carpool.
Sorry, off the economics soap box now.....

Here is my take on exhaust. STAY STOCK. Anything else drones loudly at hwy speeds and is very annoying and gets into your brain, driving you crazy. I went to a free flow cat and muffler. Loud drone, Changed to a quieter muffler, still too much drone, changed to quietest I could find, still bad. Went to a longer resonator, no good still. During all this my gas miliage never changed. I an installing a New completely stock system this afternoon. When it comes to my experience with exhaust, stock is best.
Cheers,
Sean

The dump is cheaper than buying an exhaust, I don't really like the stock exhaust sounding. I'm young, I like the drone and the attention it gets. With the dump if I don't feel like hearing it with the flip of a switch is goes back to stock.

Dude... Keep the stock exhaust! I put on new exhaust for the Cruiser, and now I have to put on a custom resonator because of the tubing is so big in diameter (3"). The noise level in the Cruiser from the resonation is soooo bad. On top of that its not going to be cheap! I strongly recomend to keep the stock exhaust.

Flip of a switch? Electric cut outs are $200.

I would not call that significantly cheaper than the cost of a stock exhaust. Fortunately, you only need one. Unfortunately, it will be a complete waste of money.

Unbolt your exhaust from your cat and try it. You will hate it.

Of course, my students surprise me all the time with the stupid s*** they do to their cars in order to get attention.

Here's a secret us old guys are sworn to keep to ourselves. You can get away with a lot more when you DON'T call attention to yourself.

If I'm not mistaken, the folks with turbos have something like a 3" exhaust system. I never have heard them complain about the sound etc. Maybe someone with a turbo can give the exhaust details. I'm pretty sure Al Colebank from MAF had one unless it was custom just for his turbo cruiser.

Bill

The turbo in and of itself is a great muffler. You can get away with a free flowing muffler and still not negatively impact the sound quality. Still, I've run a 40 series Flowmaster on my Mitsu and it was still too loud, dropped to a Dynomax that was much better. I run larger valves, cam and turbo on that vehicle so it has a distictively non-stock tone that needs the higher tones muted. Straight sixes just don't have all that sexy of a tone in my opinion. If you go to a aftermarket muffler look up the noise reduction of each. Some of the best are the straight through mufflers like the Dynomax. Noise reduction and free flow.

$300 is a lot of money to me. If I want to draw attention to myself I can run the dump. If I don't want the attention I close the dump. I'm going to disconnect my exhaust tomorrow to hear how it sounds.

Thanks for the link.

Puzzled... why does anyone feel the need to attract attention to the themselves by being noisy?
This be a teenager thing?

Yes it is being young, also I want to get more performance out of my rig. Probaly when I'm older I'll think this is a waste of money on the cruiser but for now I'm leaning towards it instead of a borla exhaust. I want something that is loud, I've taken road trips with cars that have disconected exhausts so the sound really doesn't bother me.

It will bother you when you are about 50 and can't hear squat :flipoff2:

Ya know, my GMC 6.0 runs a full dual manifold back 3" custom exhaust, Flopro mufflers and aftermarket freeflow cats. Until you look underneath, it looks stock, even exits at the stock location. My wife loves the sound, and the noise keeps me from getting into the throttle too much (definite tone change when I push too hard on the skinny pedal).

That said, if hadn't come this way, I wouldn't have done it. I personally like the sleepers too....one of the "best" mud drag trucks I used to compete against in the late 80's was a fullsize Chev...you couldn't hear it running in the grandstand, but it took consistent top 3's in every race.

If it wasn't for the 38.5 tires, my FJ40 would be a sleeper too...hehehe

This is on your 91? You may find that you decrease efficiency by running without. My 91 runs free to a Flowmaster type can muffler. I'm running 2 1/4" pipe the whole length. It has a little louder than stock sound but not too loud. The 6 you will find just doesn't sound very mean. I actually had mine cut off at the 02 sensors for a day while fabricating the slider mounts. It was loud and obnoxious and didn't sound cool. It didn't provide any more power. I have a sound clip that I could send you this evening. It is actually video and you could hear my new exhaust. If you want it to sound mean put some Swampers on it. I see in your sig line you need tires anyway.

well, I'm hoping that by the time my pretty daughters are teenagers and they see some kids driving around without a muffler to be louder to get attention from the chicks etc, they'll think "Looosers!" Then I'll know I did a good job as a Dad...!
