im hoping you guys might know whats wrong with my moms cruiser. she has a '85 FJ-60 with a 2F. its been in and out of the mechanic shop 4 or 5 times in the last 2 months. all for the exaust. the problem is the gaskets keep blowing out, but it doesnt blow a peice up and out of the way like ive seen before. it pushed the part of the gasket sideways making it wrinkle. this has happened a few times now. we had the whole exaust system replaced a few weeks ago and it still blows out. i would show you pictures of the gasket but it go thrown away.:frown: the mechanic doesnt know what the hell could be causing this so i figured if anyone knew it would be someone on here.

thanks

I got 3 guesses...
1) Warped manifold.
B) Warped head.
III) Both.

What do I win?

the mechanic couldnt figure this out?

The manifold is warped. It needs to be machined (planed) or you can take the poormans approch and "run it on a belt sander" and #1 use a Toyota Gasket the Chineese ones really suck. If you do this the Tic-Tic-Tic will be gone.

I second having that manifold planed. Remember to replace the heat riser gaskets (2 of them) before having it planed. That way the machinists can plane both the intake and exhaust manifold simultaneously.

I had mine done a month ago for $30.

well thanks alot for that. i know that the mechanic planed the manifold and he checked the head and said it was fine. the car will be going in again in a few days so we will have him check it all again.

thanks guys

Miles, is the gasket deteriorating in the center, or out near the ends? If it's near the center, consider that the manifold needs to be retorqued a few times while everything is settling in, but that the carb insulator prohibits you accessing the two nuts closest to the center of the manifold.

If this is your scenario, you might have to invest the extra effort to learn now to pull the carb and retorque the manifold yourself.

Good luck

its not deteriorating at all. it is ripping the gasket and wrinkling it up under the manifold. it will take the top if the gasket, like the top of an opening, and rip the side and take the material that is loose and push it sideways instead or pushing it up and out of the way. its hard to explain. ill have some pics soon for you.
