I ran a compression test and these are the numbers I obtained. The test was done cold and dry, while not too bad they are just ok. Still need to check valve lash and fiddle with the carb a bit more, the plugs were black and sooty.

So, there I was trying to replace a bad bearing in the front output housing of the t-case. When in my haste and not wearing my glasses, I forgot to remove the snap ring holding the bearing in the housing, and BANG!!! Let’s just say screwed up 🤦🏻‍♂️

I sent Rob (aka Landcrusher909) a photo of what I had done and he tells me, Bro, I have one for you, it’s no big deal, you just have to come and pick it up. So, after a 130 mile round trip, I had a new to me housing. Lesson learned? Don’t rush and wear your glasses!!

A call to Georg at Valley Hy-brids, I had a new bearing, seal, gaskets, shifter boot and new drain plugs in a day. Everything back to the way it should be. Front driveshaft will be ready on Monday. And Thanks to Georg and Rob, I will be going wheeling on Saturday in Calico! The last time I wheeled Sully was 15 years ago at Calico, only fitting the first time back out we are going to Calico again, let the good times roll!!!

Sully is loaded up for a trip to Calico tomorrow with the So Cal Cruiser club. The last time I wheeled Sully was 17 years ago in Calico, only fitting our first trip out is Calico!

The front driveshaft was suppose to be ready today, nope, parts didn’t get delivered.
The Aussie locker was suppose to be installed, nope, the pin and spring kit I ordered won’t be delivered until next week.

Luckily we are running easy trails as there are going to be a few box stock pavement queens going, fingers crossed I can manage in 1 wheel drive 😂

Years ago, more like decades, I remember taking a road past the Calico Ghost Town road. Don't remember the number or name. Paved at first, then dirt, then notice "proceed at own risk not maintained". At one point it was inches mirror to mirror before opening up. Mines all over the place and you could see Calico Ghost Town from the bottom of the canyon. Good luck on your trip!

In my best Rooster voice "Its the driver not the machine"

Some folks could ruin an anvil with a rubber mallet.

First trip out in Sully in 17 years, the trails were suppose to be pretty mild but turned out to be a bit harder than expected, undaunted we hit every obstacle and were smiling the entire time ☺️

Sully did ok for only having 1 wheel drive! Found some things that need to be fixed, repaired or replaced.

Next time out we will have a front driveshaft and a locker!

After this weekend of 1 wheel wheeling and abusing poor Sully, the parts I should have had installed finally arrived.

I obtained an Aussie locker from Rob
(Landrcusher909), but had to wait for the spring and pin kit to be delivered before I could install it.

Had to have a new driveshaft made due to the yokes on the one I brought in were so beat up they could not get the u joints removed. They made a new shaft with a long spline slip and high angle yokes, almost too nice to put it under the vehicle.

No more “peg leg” for Sully!

Ok, I have not done this before, but I am looking for a general consensus of factory wheel color. I have a set of widened factory wheels that need to be blasted and powder coated. I’m trying to decide what color, black, gray or white and I will be running factory hubcaps as well.

I’ve added photos of what it had when I owned it the first time with black wagon wheels and how it is now with gray FJ wheels.
So what say you on the color???

Had to replace the front output flange and seal on the transfer case after our trip to calico. It was leaking pretty bad due to the old flange having some pretty deep grooves and pitted by rust. Water had gotten into the output cone at some point, destroyed the bearing, shaft and flange.

Had a front driveshaft made, using high angle yokes on both ends as well as a longer slip yoke. After a few clearance issues were resolved I was finally able to bolt it in place.

Landcrusher909 is making a rare appearance to the OC tomorrow and we will be installing a Aussie locker in the rear axle.

I dropped off the widened stock wheels at the powder coaster and should be done by the end of the week. Probably won’t have new rubber on them yet, the 37’s are too much for the uncut rear quarters!

Heading to Big Bear on Saturday, looking forward to having more than 1 wheel drive this time out!

A rare OC visit from none other than Rob, aka landcrusher909, aka Rob Burgundy, aka Rob the cruiser guy, aka Rob Tygart the Rusty Nail Racing 45 racer guy.

It’s been a long while since Rob has had any free time, he has been very busy doing race stuff. I got a Aussie locker from him a few weeks ago and he wanted to come down and help me install it. When I say help, I mean he installed it, I held a light for him, pushed and pulled on the axles, wedged things with a screw driver and made sure he had something to eat and drink.

Locker install-check!
Front drive shaft installed-check!
Radiator bolted down-check!

He did a tech inspection and found a few things I have over looked, I guess I have developed tunnel vision 😵‍💫

Now I think we are ready for another trip this weekend to Big Bear for another club run!!

Yesterday we attended our clubs annual “snow run”, it turned out to be more mud than snow, and yes, ih8mud! We ran our clubs adopted trails 3N12C and 2N09A. Thank you to dirty rice Joe for heading up the run and making sure everyone was safe and had fun.

So far we have brought the motor back to life, flushed the fuel system, replaced the carb, new intake/exhaust gasket and removed all air leaks, replaced the clutch hydraulics, fixed t-case bearing and leaks, new front driveshaft and installed a rear locker.

We have only wheeled Sully twice since getting him back and each time we have found things that need attention. Items that need to be addressed now are:

Shocks (puking fluid every where)
Bump stops
Get rid of the big ass steering wheel
Smaller tires (33 or 35’s)
Remove spare tire carrier (not a fan of it)
Remove Metal Tech cage (any interest in it?)
Anchor rear bench seat
Replace battery tray

That’s all I can think of for now, I’m sure there are more things to do.

My vote for tires are the Kanati 35x10.5x15. I really love mine. Great to see this rig back in service and back with your family for a 2nd round.

^^^ This. I'm diggin my 35x10.5x15 Mud Hogs. They are really quiet on the road and have great traction offroad. Best part is that 5 of them will run you right at $1k
