Bought 1977 FJ40 1 month ago. I've done some minor maintenance on it. It had not been licensed for 6 years. Great looking FJ. Took her to town and blew all the oil out in 1 minute - lost the engine. What happened (pvc)? Best repair a new/used engine? What do i lookout for going forward? Bought this for my son and plan to keep it forever. Thanks
 
Can you give some more info on the loss of oil? Did it spray out on the ground or did it go up in a puff of smoke or what? No oil was left in the oil pan? I have never heard of anything like this happening.... unless a rod make a sudden exit through the bottom of the oil pan.

Just find another 2f. Or rebuild the one you have. It will last a lifetime. If you can find an 84-87 2f out of an fj60 would be the better option. A rebuilt f will last a lifetime.

Agreed. Too many people on here jump straight recommending engine swaps. The F/2F is a reliable, torquey, bombproof motor if maintained properly, and a whole lot easier to replace than doing an engine swap.
 
It's true a 2f will save you money on the replacement and bolts right in. However there are other options if you want. It just depends on what you're looking for and your intended use. I'm partial to Diesels because I grew up overseas and that is the norm. It may not be your cup of tea or anyone else's.
 
a good used 2f should not be hard to find ,and way cheaper than another type engine install.

Why the 84-87 2f? And whats your thoughts on going to a 2FE while rebuilding?

The later 2F has better balancing, and other minor desirable tweaks that make it the best of the 2Fs. I might broaden it to say that any 2F out of an FJ60 will be great and will have the flat top pistons and block drilling for the factory power steering which is what I would really want.

2FE would be an excellent option if you can do this type of work, or a running 3FE out of an FJ62 is also an excellent motor.

I'd bet a running 2F could be found near you and that will be your most straight forward swap.

One other thing (having just gone through this)...keep your FJ40s existing carb and linkage. It will be easier to use this on a later 2F than the carb that came on FJ60s because the linkage is different.

Getting a little tired of the overselling of the F & 2F engines. It has been said too many times by many intelligent people... Wish they would stop and think before they write... if the 2F lasted a lifetime, why are there so many threads on here with people looking at replacing or rebuilding them? :rolleyes:

If you simply mean it won't spontaneously combust or magically disappear rather than implying that it will never stop running, then my apologies for the gripe.

An interesting point. My 76 2F did last a lifetime-36 years and 291k miles. But the point is well taken, that eventually, all motors will need an overhaul. But there are not may other readily available and adaptable motors that will go in a Land Cruiser and last as long as a 2F, and it fits perfectly, no adapters needed.
 
Wow - thanks to all for your thoughts. Never heard of a galley plug but must be it.(looked it up and will check it tonight) The oil poured out of the engine. There is a broad streak of oil leading from our drive for about 5 blocks then nothing. No oil in the drive or where it was parked. Driving at night no burning smell or smoke that we noticed. Would like to stay original if reasonable. So will start looking for F2's and might buy rebuilt but tough sell at this point. Is it best to pull the transmission and engine at once to do this. Should we replace the clutch as well - worked fine before?

I bought my '74 FJ55 in 1986. A few years later I saw an ad in the paper for a free '72 F engine ( had dropped #6 exhaust valve which was now lodged in the cylinder). So I rebuilt the '72 to replace my stock late F engine for a year while I rebuilt that. I had to keep the late F engine pretty stock, it was still smogged at the time, but I did bore & balance it. In the summer of 2004 I found 9 F/2F engines at a machine shop, the machinist just wanted them gone. So I took them. They all had some problem...a '77 2F had put a rod through the block, a '76 2F had been put together with a bad cam bearing, a couple had been run dry, some were just old. I traded away some of the engines, but I took apart a few of them. I used the best of those pieces to build the engine I'm currently running. There's nothing like taking an engine apart and putting it together and making it run to teach you how it works. There are very few mysteries in an F series engine, and I like what I know.
