After three tries, I am out of time and patience. Looking for a local shop to get me through emissions.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. I am located in So. chandler but can drive a little ways for a good shop.

thanks!

You just need to move to Pinal County!

It is horrible to do but dump a quart of denatured alcohol in the tank and re-run. if it got my buddies beater Chebby through emissions it should work for anything.

morning,
Failed first for elevated Hydro Carbons ( over 400 at idle and load) and CO ( 11-12% at idle and load).
Brought it home and times, adjusted valves, and idle, 2nd test similar results.
I knew it was running rich, so pulled the carb for rebuild. Found one throttle chamber badly rusted, such that the throttle valve would not close at all ( me thinks I found the problem). Cleaned up so it closes properly and set idle etc.
Last test results:

At Idle HC247 / pass CO 1.82 / pass
At load HC 318 / fail CO 8.68 / fail

I dont know if it is still too rich? Or am I not getting air to the air rail?

Just loosing interest in chasing this rabbit,

Here is some of the evidence of the rich condition. Exhaust splatter before I rebuild the carb.
I just inspected the hose to the air rail and found it blocked. I think it is worth one more test before I give up

Run some Alcohol down the tank as well. Run it hard down the freeway to the test. Getting the cat nice and hot!

Thanks, today I unblocked the air rail.
I also realized I have not been greeting it hot enough,
Finally I just had a new exhaust system fabbed up by Scottsdale muffler and I had them install a cat.
I scooped it with infer red temp reader, and it just won't get hot.
I will take it out for a long test drive and see what happens

Getting closer

I can't seem to get the engine hot/ warm, drove for 25 minutes in 3 rd gear at hi revs and it barely gets warm

where does your temp gauge peg when you bring it into the station ?

I usually take 45 minutes, and that's in July/August

The gauge never goes above the left most market.
With my infer red meter oil pan peaks at 110f, the head never exceed 125f
The exhaust header reaches 450-500 by the cat its down to 250

Check your thermostat and maybe replace it with a hotter one. Also be sure the gasket on the top is in place. Over heating problems could be in many areas but usually not getting warm is in the thermostat. It's not cold enough here that you shouldn't be able to get it up to running temperature. I would also check the timing. I know when my timing was retarded to far my engine in the my 68 ran hot. To far advance if it's run cooler I don't know? Maybe I have this backwards as this was probably over thirty years ago I had the over heating and timing issue.

Never had to deal with a mid seventies cruiser and emissions. My 68 when I use to have to take it thru emissions even with no emissions crap it would pass for the requirements of my 89 FJ62. I would set the valves, check compression. Then time it and I was good to go with the stock carb (one barrel). From the mid seventies on these are a nightmare with all the crap under the hood.

Did you install a CAT to help with emissions? Personally I would have figured out what was wrong instead of throwing something new into the mix. I know CATs do a job to help clean the air but not fan of how hot they get and possibly starting a fire in dry vegetation.

I installed the cat just for this reason. I think it is temp related some how. The exhaust system never get warm enough. I will take it out and driver it harder and longer and see if that helps.
Not sure about effect of timing or do I have the right temp spark plug????:hmm:

Getting so close I can taste it. This time let it get up to mid range temperature, had to place a small piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. Also cracked open the air cleaner to get a bit More air in. All I can think of now is playing with the timing, I'm not sure if it is correct under load

Update - sounds more like Air fuel mixture under load, have too much fuel or too little air.

Your CO Result indicates too rich of a mixture. Go leaner but not much. In my experience it really doesn't take much in the old f and 2fs to make a big change in HC and CO emissions. California and I had a bad relationship because of this and my 77. As you said, running a bit hotter would help. I just wouldn't count on a huge change. Lean it out and close the air cleaner back up to see where you're at. I would recommend a couple of degree change in timing as well if you haven't done that. Just my $ .02 of course. Good luck

Thanks, just swaped jets and will give her a go.
What direction should timing adj go , advance or retard?

Here is what a smaller jet twirled, not much
Next stop timing retard
( btw I. Have the liquid tune up already installed)
