I imagine you were able to use the original radio brackets as well.:)

Yes Cruiser Dan, the Japanese have there stuff, very much in order.
I was able to remove the two side brackets from the factory radio and cassette, and attach these directly to the new Sony stereo (in the provided holes).
I then bolted the new stereo, straight back into the dash of the Battle Cruiser, via the original 4 mounting bolt holes.

FYI, despite the instruction manual suggesting the use of the RCA plugs for new rear speaker plugs (at the rear of the new stereo), this did not work.
After initially wiring the new rear speakers into the stereo, via these RCA plugs, I removed these and wired the speakers, directly into the accessory wiring harness. And Bingo, I now have a great 4 speaker sound system, for the new stereo!

Hope that helps

Thread revival.

Finally getting ready to upgrade from an old Supertuner III to something with BT! Single DIN. My cubby is above my radio. @dieseldog had a 24v to 12v step down added to the 24v truck ages ago and it continues to function as it should. It is always hot so I just always need to ensure I turn the radio off when I park.

I do need front speakers badly as the OEM ones are barely doing anything at this point but tearing most of the dash out is just not appealing to me right now.

I will take some pics when I get around to the process.

So I was able to use the brackets that were in there.
I previously had a single din stereo with no BT and I swapped it with something more modern.

Unfortunately the OEM harness plug was long gone so I used heatshrink solder connections for the new unit. There are large 6x9s in the back doors and someone ran an odd loom to the back for the PO (we all know him). It is not speakerwire but it works fine.

Above shows the bracket attached to the cubby and the old Alpine stereo. I have no way to know if they are the OEM ones. I moved them with the cubby to the new stereo and added a second screw to the receiver.

Old unit above.

New Pioneer with BT and a USB slot installed.

The bezel was alread broken on the right side :( but went together fine.
The new stereo has a bunch of settings I had to be sure to turn off to avoid too much of a parasitic draw. It is connected to the 12v step down converter which is always hot. That runs the cigarette lighter plug as well as the stereo.

I guess these days it would not matter if the lighter was still on 24v since most rechargeables are self regulating and good up to about 31 volts.

For the '97 FZJ70, we went with a single DIN floating display unit. It is non-stock in appearance, but that was not a strong consideration. This Cruiser is my bride's. As such, it has all the functions she wants from the system plus a display screen large enough for convenient viewing.
As can be seen in the picture, it covers a portion of the drivers side AC vent but not enough that we have noticed.

12volt electrical system in that truck right?

Yes. The '97 has the 1FZ engine so she is 12v.

The other 70s might be a confusing factor here because that is what you have seen me with. The '86 BJ70s started life with 3B engines so they have 24v systems. They also need new stereos; but with 24v systems, they will present challenges (i.e., cost in $ and integration) so they are on the list for later.

So I have a step down converter but it is always hot and lives in the engine bay. It is pretty big and old. They seem to have shrunk in form factor a bit. You could likely integrate one of these (link below) right behind the 12v stereo and still use the original plugs (if they are still in there) using one of Crutchfield's install kits. Then any 12v stereo will work. I did not shop for 24v stereos at all since I already have the converter installed.

I just did a quick search and discovered "they" are now making multi volt 12v/24v headunits. I had no idea.

I guess a Mud search would have helped as well for me should I have wanted to just go back to 24v (2017 thread):
