In my never ending search for a 80, and one being sold from under me, came across one reasonably priced and sub 200k miles, only problem seller states is a bad speedo, is the speedo connected to the odometer? I know in rovers they use a weird combination of the tcase and wheel speed sensors, just don’t know about fzjs. Also engine had a rebuild with the main parts being oil and coolant systems, gaskets, timing, some crank components, and machining and pistons, im a idiot on engines as never got to wrench on my disco before it blew and I know it ain’t count for much but is this pic of the top end a good sign? Only pic of the engine interior, but bay was clean and tidy.

no speedo generally means no odometer. The speedo is electrically driven by signal from the speed sensor in the transfer case. If it isn't displaying speed, the odometer isn't rolling miles.

That photo of the cylinder head is only showing one fresh from the machine shop. It not installed on the engine and has not been run in that photo. It is nice and shiny, but hasn't had oil in it yet. In short, it's inconclusive.

You are correct about speedo/odometer working as a pair.

Entire gauge doesn’t need to be replaced, if it’s a fault in the gauge. The speedo/odometer are independent & replaceable.

Just ordered a speedo from cruiserparts.net for $100. Installing it this weekend.

Well IIRC the obd1 and obd2 rigs differ, in that the odometer is driven by a cable. I could be wrong.
I can tell you that the cam bearing caps are in the wrong order at least on the intake side. If you look close, it reads 4 and then 3 from front to back where as the intake goes from 3 to 4, as it should. If that's any indication, someone wasn't taking their time. looks pretty though?

My 94 is ODB1 and is electrically driven. The 93 & 94 might be electronic when optioned with ABS as that needs an electrical signal.

Obd1 is electric. There s a sensor down on the transmission that produces the signal for the speedometer.

A non functioning speedo/odo could be the part attached to the transmission, the wiring or the printed circuit board on the back of the speed.
The printed circuit board can be repaired, I had this done in the spring for a non functional speedo in my 93.

I have a 94 with ABS and there's an electric pulse that drives both the odometer and speedometer.

FWIW, my speedometer was out for a month when my first yellow box failed, and my truck didn't run as well without the speed-indicating pulse. The worst symptom was stalling on idle-down after higher RPMs, like you do on a fast moving street with traffic lights. Replacing the yellow box restored my speedometer, odometer, and made the truck run better again.

The ECU must make bad guesses if it loses the speed signal.
