I have a 73 fj40. The PO messed up the adjustable seat rails when he adapted them to some other seats. I have all of the brackets and they are fine. I want to stay mechanical/old school/non-electric with the seats. The Supra and Celica seats look pretty good. My question is...Do I need the OEM rails or will most salvaged seats have adjustable rails attached? I want something that fits pretty close and looks like the OEM seats.

Most seats from the yard will have adjusters...

Making them "work" and installing them so that they will stay put in the event of a crash is a whole 'nother thing...

Hit the F A Q for some other seat ideas.

Good luck!

give them to me :flipoff2:

seriously: we used the existing seat rails, bolted a square plate of metal on top of them, and from then on you can use whatever seat you wish. Just drill holes in the plate appropriate to your seat, bolt the seat to the plate and affix the rails - bingo.

In reality, measure - measure - measure. but this was much easier than adapting the rails that came with the seat to the cruiser, particularly since modern rails have relatively large handles that intrude too much forward into the foot space.

Since i dont have rails in working condition, I will probably take some measurements and spend some time @ the yard.

I will be looking for:
Black vinyl/leather
Mechanical / non-electric adjusters on seat
Fairly close in appearance to OEM
Doesn't protrude to far forward
Fits brackets fairly close.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks for any help.

if I were you, i'd hang on to the rails, then find some seats, and if you don't need the rails, chuck 'em later. I don't know what my seats are out of, but toyota something, SR5 marked on the bottom in junkyard paint marker, s'pose corolla or 4runner, have never seen stock 40 seats (live in a cold climate therefore vinyl=cracked, trashed, replaced.) I seem to recall that golf seats mount relatively flat, so on the stock risers they would likely work, and they are one of the most comfortable seats I can think of, good adjustment, lumbar support, etc. and a pair of buckets would leave lots of room for a console.

Homebrew - I replaced mine with a set of cloth buckets out of a '94 Celica. The seats will come with the adjuster rails ... all I had to do was mount 2" flat stock to the existing brackets and drill/bolt the seats to this since they were 1" narrower on each side. Make sure you use grade 8 hardware or better for the reasons Poser posted above ...

Back from the Yard

Found some Acura Integra seats at the yard. They were close to what i was looking for, but cloth. I would have them covered. He wanted $150 for the pair with the seat belts. I thought that was a little steep. Seats have a 8" rip down the side and are a little weathered. Mechanically, plastic, foam and belts are great.
What do you think?

Way high IMO - I picked mine up for $60 with no rips or sun fading. Keep looking ...
