Lostmarbles / Kling-on - thank you!

KlingOn, you and I have pretty much the same setup there. It looks like we are both missing the "hook" as pointed out in the diagram lostmarbles posted. It's not a big deal now that I know "something" goes there.

It would be cool if someone had a picture of the hook so the world could know how it orientates on there. Just a detail, not a big problem.

Running fuel lines, vacuum lines, and so forth today. Updates soon!

Today I mounted the vacuum tank under the driver floor, ran vacuum lines (yes, just rubber vacuum line for now) and ran fuel lines. The idiot previous owners ran petrol through the water separator and I had to drain and clean everything! Argh!

I know it's not pretty, but I should be getting warmer. Hey....does anyone have a 11/80 -ish BJ42 Wiring diagram?

Ugh!! no kidding. I am having a lot of fun with the BJ - but I can't wait to hear the loping idle of dual 3" exhaust behind a big block mopar.

How is the "TJ55" as I'd like to call it now :-) ?

later man!

The 55 is good!
Getting ready to dig back in on it. I changed to oil in it today. Yes, the oil that was in it when I drove down to your place in Oct of '09!

Nice work Dallas! Good to see you're not slacking on this project! ;)

I bet crushers would know exactly what that hook is supposed to look like.

Question. It appears that the gauge cluster is out of an earlier FJ40. Thus, I am sure it's 12V, etc.. Does that mean I need to track down a 24V gauge cluster?

See my post #171 in this thread (and follow the link) Dallas.

The 24V version has a dropper resistor and there appear to be a difference in the actual PCB (printed circuit board):

I've got a 24 volt cluster that's in rough shape if you would like. The Ammeter is pouched, but the rest worked last time I checked. You could swap out what you need to make one out of two. I'm pretty sure the odometer and speedometer are not 24 volt.

Unfortunately I'm out of town for a while but as soon as I get back home I'll pull it out of the box and take a look.

In case you want to do a conversion from a 12V cluster to 24V....
This is the "dropper resistor" .

It's a 30 Ω (ohm) resistor and I think the J stands for 5 Watts. Should be available in any electronics parts shop like Radio Shack. You also have to add a resistor for the oil pressure meter or swap this meter from the old cluster.

Good luck,

Rudi

It's interesting that the following (relating to the combination meter) are common between 12V and 24V versions:
  • ammeter
  • fuel gauge
  • fuel sender
  • temperature gauge
  • temperature sender
While the following are different:
  • oil gauge
  • oil sender
  • bulbs
  • printed circuit board
(Just summarizing .... And someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Tom, you are perfectly right!

Well my BJ 42 amp meter is 50 amp and my 76 FJ40 is 30 amp ...and I'm looking for a 50 amp for the BJ too :(

So from what I can see you can source that 50A ammeter from any late-model 40-series cruiser ...independant of whether it is an FJ or a BJ or 12V or 24V

Edit: Part number 83610-60023 - "Ammeter assy" - Used in BJ, HJ, & FJ 40-series models produced from Jan 1979 to April 1986

Hey Dallas,

Good work on the project!

Regarding hooks...I have access to a few beat up BJ60s & HJ60s, they often have a hook remaining. Would you be interested in one?

Also, regarding the clusters, some parts are still available for the post 1979 FJ / BJ.

Cheers!
