I'm haviing trouble getting the distributor shaft into the oil pump pick up, any tips?

On Coolermans page there is an FSM
For mine I set it up so the shaft slot was just after where it need to be to go in and while holding slight down pressure with my left hand I rotated the engine with the fan belt--that way I can feel it drop when it snicks into place and know it is fully seated
however the base of the distributor (non-USA) is not seated all the way
I hate to do it, but if I drop the oil pan and remove the oil pump, I should be able to install the pump once the distributer is fully seated, right?
