One thing to consider for all you guys who think you're going to be taking your swingarms on and off on a semi regular basis is that you have to plan around not having any wiring run on them.

I thought I was going to do the same until I realized that my passenger-side swingarm had wiring for the license plate bulb, CB antenna, auxiliary back up lights and back up camera. The driver side has no wiring and that does come off for pseudo-daily driving duties.

You bring up a very good point here. I will be using Deutsch connectors for all of my wiring as they are waterproof and sealing caps/plugs are available for them. See here: Deutsch DT Series Caps and Plugs

The problem is most have been there done that with swingouts that you almost need instructions on how to open them! This swingout will literally take 2 seconds to open and close.
There will be no pop pins, it will have an oem style latch with a gas strut to assist and hold it open. They will be 3/4 length arms so they will only be about 24" long, the latch is a slam style latch so there will be no need to work a latch when closing.

Ok, this may work. If you can make it where my 7YO can open/close it, that would be perfect. Hopefully the hardware you are using will accomplish this.

My intent is to only have a swing out on during trips to carry my spare. I have roadside as part of my auto insurance and see no need to carry the spare everywhere I go around town.

Yes I do too, but that is a major time-sink. It takes up to 2 hours for them to come if you are metro, longer if you are rural. Then they have to do whatever is needed.

The quick connectors are a great idea but the problem remains if you remove the swing!
Where's your license plate now or your back up camera or the reverse light? They are sitting in your garage wile you are driving around town!
If you plan on removing the arm then you can't mount any of those to it!
The plate is easy enough to swap.

Umm maybe I'm missing something but who said your plate and backup camera have to be on the swing? Doesn't seem like much of a problem really. If you REALLY open your hatch that much day to day and you anticipate taking the swing off, mount your plate to the bumper itself.
Honestly I wouldn't miss the backup camera . In fact whenever I finally order this bumper I don't even plan on relocating it.
You guys could leave it in the stock spot and when the swing is off for DD, your camera works like normal.

Any more pics? I mentioned I was about to start building my own and have been researching the parts. I'm here wondering if you have picked yours already!

I know about the slam shut latch already and I'll be honest, don't have much confidence in them for that kind of job! A spare is a heavy beast and when mounted back there there's no room for any rattle whatsoever! I am certain you know that too and understand this is prototype phase. I love amazon but a lot of their stuff is junk! Not sure their parts have a place in your build!
Have you decided on the spindle?
Are the wings gonna be welded to main bumper as one piece or bolted to it like the front?
I have ordered some dual shear hinges from comp4x4 but have yet to see them.
The latch is not there to support the tire but simply to keep it closed and the latch is actually pretty beefy! Proper bump stops and guides are what will keep it rattle free. I'm not 100% sure I will be able to make these latches work but I'm going to try.

I'm my experience, most people that plan to remove certain thing for dd duties normally don't, I am one of those guys[emoji6]. I pretty confident if I can make the swing out as convenient as possible this will be one of those things.

You don't have to mount anything to the swing arm, my point was that you should take that into consideration when designing the bumper or how you will use it. Put the CB antenna somewhere else, put the LP on the bumper itself, etc. On Ben's design in the photos above you'd have to swap the plate back to the OEM location.

Here is a trick: leave both swing arms on for awhile. Then take the one off, and your wife will be so happy she only has half the work that you can leave the one on permanently!

Ben's goal to make the swing arm so easy to use that you're happy to leave it on is the ticket.

So the laser cutter is supposed to have a bunch of pieces for me tomorrow!
Hope they come through.
I spent all last weekend learning how to design on cad so these will be the first parts I have had cut with my cad drawings! We'll see how I did.
Hopefully I'll have some progress pics this weekend.

This is exciting! I love forums for this reason. It really is cool to see a product take shape. Thanks for letting us all follow along!

The spare tire mount looks like it has a large tolerance for multiple sizes and wheel offsets. I like where this is going.
Yes, multiple offsets, multiple angles and a high and low position. I will also have plenty of holes for mouthing accessories. I will be using a 2" receiver for the tire holder for accessories as well.

You will also notice there are 3 holes on each swing arm, this is so the tire can be run on either side.

Got a wing mocked up today. It definitely took some time to get a design that will work with the swingouts and still look good without them, I think I found a good middle ground. I'm pretty happy with how it's coming out!

That's a nice looking design! I spent some time mocking one up in cad some time back then got distracted.
My thought was thicker steel at bottom than top to cut some weight. You tend to drag the butt than hit things square on from the back and nothing from the top. I was also trying to "wrap" the swing outs around the corner and put the pivot in double shear on the side. Was thinking a slide up pin from underneath. If the pivot is in double shear, the pin can be smaller diameter. Another beni is that the swing arms move away from the rear hatch a bit. But...never made it, so kudos on your ability to get great designs made!

As is said in Alabama, Real Niiice!

Got the wings on cad this past weekend, I built the one in the pics by hand the pulled it off and started drawing. Hopefully my drawings are close!
I will be going to the laser cutter today and will push for them to get me a full bumper shel by the weekend. Once I have the shel I can start on the mounting brackets and recovery points.

Am I seeing correctly that the wing sticks out approximately an inch wider than the body at the wheel arch? Is that intended or just how it ended up during mock up?
