Thought I did everything right when changing Distributor O Ring. My wife just called and said the Check Engine light came on. I took pictures of where the rotor was and thought I put it back in the same position. Didn't set crank to top dead center just replaced rotor to same position. Test drove and it ran perfect so I know it is close. Do I have it one gear off. Can I rotate it one gear either way? Should I go to Auto Zone and have the code read. The light has never come on so I'm sure it has to do with my job. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks T
97 LX450 I also marked the bolt location for the adjustment

Won't hurt to read the code.

or, for ~$70 you can get an Ultragauge and read the code yourself - it's nifty to have if you are into numbers

OBD II Bluetooth Reader on eBay - ~$12

Forget the Ultragauge, go on eBay and get a wireless OBD II reader which you can plug into your truck and read on your iPhone or Android device. They're $10-$15, the app is free and you're all set.

These things are so useful and so cheap it's silly not to buy one.

I don't have a dog in the fight, I'm not selling them, I just have one and it's awesome.

x2. I don't have OBD-II in my truck, but I use it on my other cars and the "HUD" you can get on your phone/tablet is really nice.

FYI it's easier on Android vs. iPhone.

I barely have a cell phone. I'm old and don't have the gadgets that you are talking about. Will the check engine light come on if the timing is off? My wife just got back and I'm looking over the engine to make sure I didn't knock any hoses off etc. It all looks good. I have an old timing light that I used on older cars so I guess I'll get it out and see if that tells me anything. I took a picture of the timing mark which was around 10 degrees prior to removing dizzy. I'm going to get it back to that location and again check the rotor location. In order to remove CEL do I just disconnect battery? Thanks T

I rechecked the rotor location and it looks good. I hooked up a timing light without shorting the diagnosis points and it hovers around 6-7 BTDC. I can't get the plastic cap off the where I'm suppose to short. It has a tab and I've moved it every which way. It is about ready to brake off. O Reillys near my house says they will check the code for me. The truck runs to well for it to be a tooth off I think. Maybe the CEL is a coincidence. Any help on removing the cap. Thanks

Start truck and the CEL is not on. I don't have any idea what was different. I took out the Dizzy and replaced it in the same spot after trying different gear settings. I know if was right in the first place. Put everything back so I can head down to get the code read and no CEL. I'm guessing it wouldn't do any good to have it checked since it is not on or does it have a memory? I would still like to know how to remove the cap on the diagnostic port so I can short it out the check timing. Thanks T

Pull up on the tab located on the right side of the box:

Thanks, that is what I was doing but I'll give it a little more mussel. I can't count on how many plastic connections I've broke in my life so I was going to be patient and ask for help. Drove many miles and the CEL didn't come back on. I would have thought that once it was activated it would stay lit until the battery was disconnected. Is there come codes that go out like this one did? Thanks T

Maybe if the harness connector to the distributor wasn't pushed in completely or had some corrosion, that could set a code. Don't know how quickly that one would go away however.
