I picked up a couple of steering joints and pillow blocks from summit. Hoping to have the steering situated this week and the tube fenders tacked together.
I stopped by Sherwin Williams automotive today and dropped off a paint sample. They said it'd be a couple of weeks to match, but I'll be able to paint up the fenders and windshield to match the rest of the truck which I thought would give the thing "that finished look" missing from a lot of trail purposed rigs.
My son is going to start on the wiring soon (I'll be checking his work), but with a little luck, I'll have it started by December. Maybe even get it out on a snow run.

That was just a start. I got the rear tire into the fender and called it good. Flexy for sure though.
 
I like your front bumper man. Whats up with the Cooper tires? I have been seeing them on a ton of rigs. Are they supposed to be good tires? I still have yet to see them perform on the trail, just see them in town. Its like, one day Ive never heard of them, the next day-I see them on like every other truck. I don't subscribe to any 4x4 mags any more so Im not up on what the newest tires are.
 
A friend of mine runs them (cooper stt pro) on his Heep, and has loved them in every situation he's thrown at them. Based on his experience (and that we wheel pretty much the same stuff), I decided to give them a try (plus I got one hell of a discount @ Americas Tire as an incentive to get them over another brand) and I'm hoping it was a good choice. For me, Cooper has always been a solid brand and the STT Pro had some features I really liked such as the extensive siping and alternating tread blocks.
 
I spent about 8 hours in the garage today and was pretty surprised at how little I got done. I managed to finish notching the cross member for the transmission and tack the rear fender flares to the quarter armor. It's bizarre how fast burning and cutting metal can just kill time.
Anyways, progress is happening and I'll keep plugging away at one thing or another in hopes of getting this thing at least started by December.
 
as I don't plan on moving back to Oregon, trade you for one a bit more appropriate. This came off an early 70s FJ40... to be honest, I don't remember which... I'm thinking my first, but it may have been my last 302 powered fj40....

Those are pretty cool, but mine are the original plates to the truck. Gotta keep em.
 
I started on the rear anti-wrap today using ruffstuff's super beef kit.

I then started on the rear crossmember which will have the torque mount for the 205 case and the frame side mount for the anti-wrap shackle. I found out the hard way that the JD squared model 3 converted to hydraulic can not handle 2" .250 wall DOM. I totally bent the hell out of the arms on the bender.:bang: I then found that the damn arms cost as much as the bender itself.
I have a good deal of .250 wall square tube, so I'll use that to fab the cross member, but this was a bummer to a productive day.
 
Make sure you do not make that torque mount on the 205 case too rigid, or you'll twist the motor and the tranny/adapter will fail.

The tcase needs to be able to "twist". A hard mounted tcase to the frame rails will fail when you really flex your rig..

I prefer these types of mounts.
