Morning Lads,
I am currently 2300 miles into my little summer trip. This is the first major (over 1000 miles) trip since the engine was tore down.
This past 2 mornings when I check the fluids, I am unable to get a read on the oil level as the dipstick is completely saturated in oil for the first 8 or 9 inches.
Any idea why this would happen? Searches and AI all point to too much oil but I did the last oil change myself about 3 weeks back and so I know it is not overfilled. Oil pressure gauge sits nicely in the middle and I have never had to top her up since the engine rebuild.
Thanks in advance. By the way, Montana is beautiful 😍

I assume you do the customary pull dipstick, wipe, reinsert, pull and read?

Sometimes I have to do it multiple times to get a clean read...

I often go further...
1) pull dipstick, wipe
2) set dipstick aside
3) wait a few minutes (do other stuff)
4) proceed with "dipping and reading"

The above process allows for drainage

If the OP's reading is still too high...
Panic button time

Yep..that's exactly what I do. Same way I have always done it. I just can't imagine a scenario where oil is blown up into the tube. I'm not overly concerned knowing it was correct 3 weeks back, there are no leaks and she doesn't burn any oil but it would be real nice to know what has changed.

The only way I can think of that an engine can make oil is to have coolant getting in to the oil pan.

Definitely not that. Not only do i not lose coolant, I have the latest Blackstone oil report from when I did the oil change 3 weeks ago stating zero coolant in oil.

Please keep us posted.

Have a great trip. And, don't tell anyone about Montana; let's keep it our little secret

Go up to Lake Mckelvey. It’s a nice trail ride up to a beautiful mountain lake at 9,000 ft.

I've often noticed oil blown/sloshed up the dipstick maybe an inch or two above full, but 8 inches seems more than normal??
Were you able to get an accurate reading later??
Are there any other (new) leaks on the engine, breather hose and PCV valve functioning, oil catch can functioning, hose kinked, ---??
I forget, was your engine completely rebuilt?

Either way sometimes when I see too much oil on the stick and to get an accurate reading, I've sprayed some carb/brake cleaner into the tube (hold onto the little red tube!) to quickly wash that off, then reinsert the dipstick "Gauge". The small amount of solvent sprayed down the tube will just evaporate.

Thanks guys, everything on the outside of the engine is new. That said, the PCV valve is easy to test. The intense driving portion of the trip is over for now so I will have much more time to inspect things very closely.
