I'm not necessarily sure this is the case. There is, realistically, probably not a great deal of difference in functionality betwixt the two. The Thai one looks less restrictive and should have more surface area, and in theory trap more dirt. However, I am still a new mechanic - I'm applying what I know about fluid flow to this problem.

Oh my, the "proper" oil filter is no longer available!?A critical part like this makes the Cruiser useless, likely the best thing to do would be crush all of them, and send the remains to China so they can make something useful for us!?
Realistically, other than the "I have something cooler than you" factor, it doesn't matter. Looking at the available data, (oil analysis results) has always shown that the 1fz is very easy on oil, doesn't make junk, so just about any average or better filter will do a great job. Even if the filter were removed, oil changed at ~3K miles, likely wouldn't significantly reduce engine life?
