I'm considering purchasing a Land Cruiser. I want a diesel, and I do not want electronic ignition. I want the long-term storage capability of diesel fuel, and I want to be able to run bio-diesel. With those criteria in mind, I'm also looking for a Land Cruiser which has the most cargo capacity.

Is there a stock Land Cruiser model version you'd recommend? If not, what is the Land Cruiser model to start with, and which diesel should I put in it?

I'm not a mechanic, so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I came here looking for recommendations because I know you guys know far more than I do.

Where do you live? This will greatly affect what is available to you.

x2 - this will make a huge difference in the advice you'll get. Different models and options in different markets.

Most diesel Land Cruisers up to and including the 80 series will not have any engine ECU. Mine has a single wire to the fuel cut solenoid and the rest is mechanically controlled.

Since you're looking to carry some gargo with you, it narrows your options pretty much to hj60/61, bj62 and hdj80... What you can find and get reasonable prize, well, it depends on where you live as others have said....

Depending on market he lives in BJ/HJ/HZJ75/78 (troopies).

Interesting. Was there a "cutoff year" for electronic ignition in Land Cruisers?

Diesels dont have"electronic ignition" because they compress hot air to burn the fuel(ignition).

In the 90s they began to add electronic components to the fuel pump to alter the fuelling and later they added electronics to the fuel injectors to alter the timing.

The periods when these electronc devices appeared depends on the model and the intended market.
They still make N/A diesel models for Africa and a few other countries with only one wire to the engine to stop the fuel.

I live in Central Texas.

Your options just hit the floor...

By an 80 and convert it to diesel? Cummins 4BT?

I dont think he is ready for a diesel yet! Electronic Ignition! C-mon! OK you can get a 3B powered cruiser. You are not ready for a turbo!

3b with turbo on the flat highways of texas should be fine.

btw, does diesel have a really long storage life vs gasoline? I know gas separates which can kill a fuel pump on gas driven cars but what about diesel?

I still have a container of bio I made in 2002. It still is in its same state since that time and shows no sign of separation.

3B is an old engine, but with a reliable low power, but other oils or biodiesel handles well, like 2L or 2LT, I personally would recommend 1KZ-T. He also has a mechanical pump. All these engines in my cars and I have the tested and 1KZ-T is a clear favorite when talking about engines with mechanical pump;)

1KZT Diesel

The 1KZT is a great motor.I just purchased a 02 4runner with -1KZT, 3.0,Mechanical injection pump,turbo/inter cooled,5 speed. NO ELECTRONICS------- EMP Pruff:idea:
Really strong motor. Most motors come (I see them on ebay}with electronic injection but it's an easy swap to a mech pump.
There are two chassis styles. The 130 and the 185.Main diff is the front drive is on the right and the 185 drops on the left.
You can find ton's of info on the Toyotadiesel.com forum about swaps.
Good Luck

As these guys noted, being in the US your options are limited.

Basically, your options are going to fall into stock diesels:
  • HJ-47 Troopy
  • BJ-60
  • HJ-60

...and modified cruisers.

The BJ-60 and HJ-60 were available in Canada, so they are somewhat easy to get in the US (in that they are easier than, say, important a new diesel cruiser) The HJ-47 I listed has the same 2H engine as the HJ-60, but were never available in North America. You're almost guaranteed to be looking in Australia for one (or for one that is already in North America). The 2H (HJ-47 and HJ-60) and 3B (BJ-60) are simple, reliable indirect injected diesels that can easily handle biofuels and turbocharging.

Past that, you are talking about big prices, and a LOT of work to get what you want. Not that's it's not worth it, but it's not like you can just search eBay for what you want. You are talking about buying a gas powered US spec vehicle, and modifying it with a diesel from something else (which means scrounging parts and shipping them to the US).

Austin? If so, you can test drive my 80 with a 4BT. There's also a couple of other diesel cruiserheads here in Austin (BJ70, 6BT80, HJ61, BJ60) that you can check out.

I'm looking for someone here in Austin who could point me in the right direction on converting my 97 land cruiser. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
