Hey guys i have a question. so i have pajero v34 with 4d56 engine. it has manual locking hubs. my Machanic said the freewheel hubs are not working because the inside of the hubs are missing. i get the 4wd Low feeling when i put the gear in to 4wd Low. if i put the gear to 4wd low without locking the hubs. again get the feeling that the 4wd is working. how can i know for sure what is the issue. what happen if you put 4wd without locking hubs and lift the truck. will all 4 tires rotate ? how can i check this

On almost all vehicles with selectable 4wd the low range is coupled with the front wheel drive. With the freewheel hubs you are able to disconnect or connect the axle shaft ends on both sides of the axle to the hubs on which the wheels are mounted. The advantage is less drag due to than (not) turning parts in your front axle when not needed e.g. on tarmac / highways / citys....when you don't need 4wd.
With open / unlocked or free freewheel hubs and engaged 4low in your transfer box you'll get the low ratio but without front wheel drive. The front propshaft or driveshaft will spin and so will the front diff and the shafts inside the axle - but just without connection at the hubs.
On a selectable 4wd system you can feel clearly if the front wheel drive is selected as the transmission between front and rear axle will "wind up" if you go round bends.
Going around corners or going in circles - the rear axle has a shorter distance to travel than the front axle. Both are locked together in the transfer box....so have to rotate at same speeds. Something has to compensate that. You feel that "bind" as the vehicle is unwilling to go round corners, has agreater turning cicrle...on gravel like ground you can hear that quite clearly too. You almost can't feel it on soft ground like sand or grass.
If parts are missing in one free wheel hub it is likely that you don't have front wheel drive at all - just the low range of the transfer box.
It's actually quite easy.

Oh, back to you question - if you want to test it.. ..switch both freewheel hubs to "lock" - engage 4high or 4low - lift only one front wheel off the ground - If you can turn the wheel something is wrong and if you can't - it's fine
Don't run the engine - just try to turn the wheel by hand.

do you mean turn the wheel by hand.. or using the steering wheel inside
