Diesel gurus, please help diagnose my 1HD-T

sounds perfectly normal to me - just a beautiful 1HD-T purring! smokes a little bit more than mine (and the engine is cold) but unless the oil consumption is unusual or it smokes like that when warm I wouldn't worry.

Uses less than 1L of oil ~10,000 km:)

The smoke smells like diesel. Injectors are next on the list.

pm me if you want brand new oem injectors.

You wont be looking anywhere close to $3000 i dont know where you guys even get prices like this.

I can get you new injectors for 180-205ea without any core charge.

Sounds like you need to talk to Akella, I would get those just to rule them out even you have tried everything else.

Truck sounds good in the video, smokes like the old HJ60 I sold a few months ago that needs the inj overhauled.

I see you have removed the acsd. The whole purpose of this device is to clean up the emissions when cold.
It advances the timing a little until the engine warms up,didnt anyone tell you this?

Yup, but my problem continues after it's warm.

Does it change at all when warmed up or when the ambient temperature is warm?
Or is it constant, regardless of engine temp or ambient temp?

3 times since I bought the truck it would not start when cranking over. Cranking power was good, it really tried... but would not start until I used the "manual" IP pump and gave it 3 or 4 good pumps. One time this happened the truck sat for a week, the other time it only sat overnight.

Has it done this recently?
Does the engine jump into life within seconds of cranking most of the time?

Im wondering if those 2 problems are connected

Hi Rosco,

Thanks for the help. It gets way better when the engine is warm, and the warmer ambient temp seems to make it better as well.

It hasn't done the starting issue now for many months. It turns over really quickly.

This isnt so unusal then. Have the glow plugs been checked? Direct injection engines dont need much glowing but diesel being sprayed onto warm glow plugs does wonders for complete combustion.

Your ACSD removal is probably a contributing cause

I am thinking your injection timing is off along with injectors
My injection timing is off since my ACSD removal

I haven't checked glow plugs. Sorry for the dumb question, but I thought glow plugs were only used during the initial start of the engine?

The smoke issue (after warm) hasn't changed since the ACSD removal.

I did the injection timing after removing the ACSD...

Hi asutherland, so what did you find/ whats the real cause of your 1hdt smoking, is it the glow plugs or injectors??

Embarrassingly enough, I haven't replaced the injectors yet. But it definitely on the list of to-do's.

My turbo seals are gone I think, might be because of the syn I am using but who knows... Blows blue on heavy acceleration, I should prob get it looked at before it's too late lol

I can't remembered if you looked I to this as being a cause or not....

I have some very interesting observations from Christmas break.

We drove north, to Williams Lake, Kamloops and area. We broke the trip up into sections so we never drove more than 4 hours on the highway at a time (because of our 2 year old).

During that time, I filled up twice. Once at Husky in Williams Lake and once at Shell in Merritt. Both locations are cold (-15 degrees C) so their stations sell winter diesel. I also used the higher grade diesels (ie. "Diesel-Max" or whatever its called...)

During the trip and on the way back, I noticed the truck stopped smoking, almost completely. A little bit on accel, but I would say 90% better. And NO SMOKE on idle. At all, even on a cold engine, even when in a drive gear.

We got back to the Island on Dec 31st. Since then I have not yet put another tank of fuel in (I don't usually drive it to work, so it's been lasting). The no-smoke has continued. If anyone doesn't believe me, they are welcome to stop by and check it out :D. It's like a Christmas Miracle, the TLC kind.

Since I made no changes during our trip, other than where I fueled up, I can attribute the no smoke to one (or more) of 3 things...

1. Winter diesel sold in the colder towns.
2. Higher grade diesel sold at stations I don't usually frequent, Husky and Shell
3. High speed/working harder for many hours at a time have "blasted out" the crud.

:hhmm:

Good news, hope the results last!

Yeah! I have about 1/3 a tank left, but I am going out exploring tomorrow... so I will need to fill up. I'll see if it changes tomorrow. If it does, then I'll be looking at #1 or #2 as possible causes.

Ill put my money on number 3.What type of driving do you normally do?

Did you ever try the seafoam treatment?

They seem to appreciate being used. My troopy had some seepage at the rear mains when I bought it,but as I knew the clutch was tired and needed replacement ,I wasnt too worried because I could fix it then.
Well the clutch itself is ok ,its just the bearing that makes some occasional noise.
However ,after regular use,the rear mains has completely dried up.
Previous owner was only doing 4000klms a year for the last 4 years

I have had this happen to me when I bought diesel up in whistler last winter at the Husky, the haze stopped a short time after but it returned after I filled up at a lower mainland location, and I thought it was all the same.

Fwiw I will be trying the shell v-power as I have read on here there is somewhat of a noticeable difference.

Just filled up with the V-power at Shell a half hour ago. I'm paying close attention to see if it gets any worse. But from what I can read in the pamphlet, the v-power appears to contain the anti-gel agent year round (they don't change the V-power diesel for winter conditions?)

Rosco, my driving is usually either weekend trips or wheeling. Since I moved to the Island, I haven't done a ton of long distance driving unless it's to the mainland for a period of time (like this recent trip), so most trips are shorter (less than an hour of highway driving), though I don't usually drive to work and back. I take the other diesel Fat lady... the bus. :hillbilly:

Oh, and yes... I have tried the Sea foam treatment a few times. Been adding it to my tank every 5,000km or so for good measure. Didn't notice any difference though.
