Diesel gurus, please help diagnose my 1HD-T

Andrew,

This sucks, You've been chasing this problem for so long!

Here is a thought.....

Clearly your injectors are the big contributor to the smoke. Flushing them was a good idea as it helped you rule out other things like turbo seal etc.

The best thing to do is get new injectors..... but thats spendy $$
What about converting it to single stage? Is it possible?

My common rail cummins uses a computer to control multiple injection events... as does the TDI so swapping in a single stage would me impossible. The 1HD-T is mechanical 2 stage right? Would 1HZ injectors work?

Just ideas. I admit to being more of a tractor like 3B guy but why not look into the simplification solution?

Good luck.

I know man. I would totally do something like that if it was possible, but I really don't know. We'll see what they say when they test my 1st stage and nozzles. If I can get that fixed, I'll be happy. The smoke mostly bothers me at idle on the trail and when waiting at streetlights.

Good luck!
I know some guys have had good luck where I live with ultrasonic clearing.
But your injectors have probably never been done. Might be worth a shot getting them rebuilt or doing a core exchange out of Australia or just buying a set?

Injectors are a 100000klm service item. Ill do mine whether I think its needs it or not and then I know theylll be good for another 100K.
I dont understand why owners shy away from having them done but religeously do filters ,oil changes and pour additives(often snake oil) into the tank.

White smoke can be a case of injectors opening too early. When they open too early ,the air inside the combustion chamber is not quite hot enough to burn the diesel spray immediately.
This allows the diesel spray to reach the cyl walls and cool ,causing condensation in the exhaust smoke which gives the exhaust a white colour.
Injectors opening too early can be because the springs have lost some of their tension ,which means they open before the fuel pressure in the injectors has reached its optimum pressure

2-stage injector rebuilds are only done in one or two places in BC, and no where close to where I live. They are also expensive (~$1200) to get rebuilt here. Or I can order a set of rebuilt ones from Australia with a core charge on my credit card of more than $3,000. If I lived in Australia, they'd likely already be done.

Try Berrima diesel or Cooma diesel, both of them are big names in diesel fuel injection
Another one is Diesel and Performance
You may find they will send you are set while you hang onto yours, with a core deposit of course.

Thanks Rosco.

Don't they all do that? lol

Listening to your video you need a serious overhaul... Did you ever check your conrod bearings? Should be replaced before 300000 km's. It looks like wear on the piston rings....
Good luck!

The camera's mic doesn't really pick up the sound that well. It actually sounds much different.

For those of us that are new to the whole diesel thing could you please be more specific about what about the sound in the video leads you to believe that his engine needs a serious overhaul? I didn't think that it sounded much different than mine, which now makes me wonder if there is something amiss with mine . Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Mike

Again... I wouldn't worry too much about the sound, the video makes it sound like 2 metal pales bashing together. In reality it's a nice 1hd-t purr, the same exact sound I've heard out of everyone else's 1HD-Ts...

pm me if you want brand new oem injectors.

You wont be looking anywhere close to $3000 i dont know where you guys even get prices like this.

I can get you new injectors for 180-205ea without any core charge.
