Surprisingly not much information on this other than a thread from a few years ago:

TOYOTA ATF Type T IV

In trying to simplify my garage's supply cabinet, both my 80 and 100 run the same 5w-30 motor oil and I use the same 75w-90 gear oil on both transfer cases and all 4 diffs.

My LX is an '03 so that uses type iv transmission fluid. I believe the following year it was switched to WS. On my 80, it calls for dexron ii in the transmission, which should also allow dexron iii. I'm not an oil expert but I would think that a newer fluid would have all of the same protective properties of an older fluid, plus some (with the exception of WS, which sounds like its in another category).

Has anyone run type iv in the A440f long term without any issues? I'm about to do a bulk fluid order on amazon and am back and forth on making the switch to type iv in the 80.

Toyota is recommending Dextron Type IV to replace the Type II recommended in the owner's manual.

I used this stuff to do full fluid exchanges in my A442F in my 80 and in my A440F in my FJ62. It's cheap and I never have had any issues. It doesn't say it is up to the Dexron IV standards, but if you use all five gallons like I did(each time), it still might be worth it.

Forgot the 80 has the 442 while the 62 has the 440. Sounds like pretty much any type iv fluid should work. I'm going to order up a case of the Toyota type iv and not worry about it.
Yeah, I don't think these trannys are fussy. My 80 wasn't having any issues, I just wanted to get a new batch of fluid in there after 260,000 miles. It did seem to shift a little smoother after I did it, but that could just be confirmation bias.

Dex/Merc

I would not use TIV (T4) in an older transmission that spec'ed DEXII, DEXIII or DEXIV. All of these Dex variants have been replaced by DEX/MERC which is what I would use.

CDAN, your recommendations carry a lot of weight around here. DEX/MERC it is!

In that case, those 5 gallon pails are pretty appealing if you are going to do a full exchange. As I said earlier, there was nothing wrong with my old fluid, not burned, etc., but watching the fresh red fluid come out of the cooler line just felt good. The old fluid was dark and had been in there for 23 years. At $47/5 gallons, you can be pretty liberal with it and I prefer that method of exchanging over just the dump and fill method because you are really getting all the old stuff out rather than just mixing it with the new fluid.

I haven't seen DexII or DexIII on the shelf in years. I think there may be a quart of it in my father-in-law's garage :hmm:.

After a good exchange, I think I will do a drain/fill with every oil change on both the 80 and 100. Easy enough and should keep the fluids relatively fresh.

That shows how long its been since I changed the fluid on my 80. I still have 1/4 a bottle of dex iii.

Is it in a round cardboard can?:grinpimp:

Not a bad way to go. My plan is to just do a full exchange every 30,000 miles or so using the same stuff I linked to. The exchange isn't hard and that way I know I am getting all new fluid in there when I do it. It only takes about an hour to do the whole job on the 80. No clue what is involved on the hundy though.

I use the same stuff in my power steering unit and that goes quick too. I do them both at the same time and drop off the whole pail at the recycling facility(Auto Zone) when I am done.

Can you even buy Dex II ?

After spending way too much time reading up on transmission fluids before changing mine, I came across this:

GM no longer approves DEXRON-III products and most on the market today are unlicensed products. Most will say "D3M" or something similar since they can't legally use the DEXRON trademark.

One of the many useful tidbits from this phenomenally informative thread:

Personally, I'm going to switch to Transynd or Mobil Delvac 1 ATF at some point. The important thing is don't run Dexron VI. I don't know that Toyota used Viton seals, which Dex VI damages, but more importantly I don't know that they didn't, so don't use Dex VI! ;)

Interesting about Dex VI, which should not be confused with Dex IV mentioned above. That Roman numeral stuff gets confusing.:)

Haha. Not that old but there is a good chance I took it from my dad's garage years ago!

While replacing the PS pump on my 80, I noticed how burn and brown the ATF looked. Probably not good for longevity of the pump or seals. I will start replacing the fluid here too on a more regular basis.

It does get a bit confusing figuring out when type x as been superseded by type y but then type z is not cross compatible. All I know is that CDAN has been known to "approve" some non OEM parts or even off label uses for other parts, but when he says "not" to use something, I don't need to be told that twice!

Napa has house brand dex 3,$ 2.58 at my Napa here just bought some yesterday
