I'll bet it's the head gasket, and since you stopped immediately you won't have any more damage than that.

Fingers crossed for you.

about 350 miles on the motor

naw did not retorque the head bolts, but the shop said it be fine without...

Guess i find out monday ( they retorqued it supposedly after the first freeze plugg popped )

so cracked head or gasket eh?

hopefully just head gasket :)

Oh man this sucks.
I feel for you bro.
It does sound like the head gasket between cilinder and coolant lines.
If that happens its best with a bang (lots of smoke), I had it with a Toyota Crown with a 5M-GE engine. It went slow on the highway gasket gave way on one cilinder they didn't notice before to late and the whole engine was gone. I wasn't there myself but they said they never noticed anything untill it stopped :bang::bang::bang:. So you did good on your's. You should try to be there when they open it up, and bring a camera.

Just keep the spirit up, this to will go away, take few :beer: finish the work and you'll be :steer: by the end of the week.

Unbelievable.. sounds like a never ending story *....
but don`t give up Destin some day (hope in the near future) your
FJ will run ... smooth and fine, I´m pretty sure about that !
A word to the mechnaic shop, have they fixed a new head gasket during the rebuild ???? Think they haven`t , hard to trust them after all in the last weeks/month just my two pence.
.. take few beer
Michael,
alcohol doesn`t solve problems ;)

Cheers
Peter

* when something goes wrong I always remember this song ( gives a new spirit) :D
YouTube - cliff you can get it if you really want

cool guys, Hopefully it will all get sorted monday...

You think it caused any serious damage?

I hope not :(

Don't think you did any damage, you shut it down right away so it didn't ran hot.
Nothing to do than bring it to the shop and wait.:wrench::rolleyes::wrench:

cool I hope so man :D

I will see if they will let me snap some photos when they remove the head...

Dunno if they will, they be prolly pretty pissed to have the motor come back a second time, but i see if they will let me snap a few.

I agree with the cracked head or headgasket, is the oil frothy? Look at the bottom of the oil cap for foam ...

Tucker

no foam but there was some weierd milky stuff under the cap...

I cannot see where it could be leaking outta the head gasket, but i guess it would be just a high pressure leak when running...

I really hope the shop does not try to fxxx me over.

I noticed this thing has been burning oil too i guess.
I attributed one quart i added to the oil filter sucking up oil, but i have added 2 quarts total in the 400 miles i have driven it...

Maybe they just fxxxed the whole motor up and I am screwed.
I hope their work guarantee is reliable and fast.

This place was supposedly the most reputable place in all of portland.

meh

That looks like oil and water mixed under the cap. They should have put correct amount of oil in it, so once it ran the oil level should have been correct. So most likely you lost 3 quarts of oil over 400 miles, either way 2 quarts is still a problem. Good luck, hope they honor their rebuild. If they should have checked the heads and blocks for cracks and also for warps so this is really odd for a fresh motor.

Correct, would be interesting to know if Destin had seen this mixture before the head gasket cracked, it`s a warn signal to change the head gasket immediately.
This Toyota engine is a "Bauernmotor" :) ( can`t translate this in english ) means they are very simple build, easy to service and easy to rebuild if the engine shop do it correct.
They are not complicated engines like Ferrari, Porsche or other high tech manufactures fitted in their cars.
Ok, what would I do if all else fails?
I would search a good running used engine and store the original engine*.
Cheers
Peter

* and let it rebuild without time pressure from someone I can really trust.

I would call it idiot proof.

Destin, see what they say, and then look for a second engine. F135s are available at great prices, and having a second engine means that you can still enjoy your 40 while the engine is out and being worked on...having a spare old engine is not a bad thing.

Good idea!

11203-60010 is the number I have for F135 head gasket, but it might be an old number with an upgrade to yours. Also available is the valve regrind kit, which is what I bought, 04112-60062. It has all the gaskets you need to redo the head and it is a current number.

called the shop, they said they will not be able to look at it till later this week..

They told me "head gaskets do not blow on new motors", and that it was likely i messed it up by having it tuned badly. ( I think it is was running great ) They said if the timing was off or the carb to rich or low i could have burned out the gasket ?

Sounds like they are setting up the defense that i messed it up, better fxxxing not be.

What you think, they gonna screw me?

Sorry to say, but my guess is, yes

This is why I cautioned you not to do anything yourself in that PM I sent you a while back...you paid to have an engine overhauled, and since it was not running properly, it was up to them to get it ALL squared away to your satisfaction...you PAID for this. Now they will try everything to get out of it.

Find yourself another running F135 right away, and swap them out quickly, this sounds like it will be another long drawn out pain in the a$$ until your original engine is OK again :frown:

All i did my self was the timing, points and fuel mixture :)

You telling me i could have blown the head gasket by doing those incorrectly ( they are def spot on now )

Might take it to landcruiserNW and have them to a compression check etc.
All I know is i paid good money, had the freeze plugs go, now the head gasket.

Willing to bet their is something wrong in the coolant system.
