good to know

well if anyone can chime in and say for sure one way or another please let me know :D

They will be painting the black on monday :D

I would no way do it, that thing sticks sexy and honestly it would look like s*** if it was done.

Why should they paint them black under the hood and the firewall
No factory did such a crazy thing.
All car/truck factories in the early days - even Toyota- welded their tubs together, primed them and than painted them in body color.
I `ve never seen a different color on the firewall or on the underside of a hood on any stock restored car/truck.
This black must be made by one of the former owners.

If you would have sanded your firewall a little bit before blasting this hole thing... you would have discovered red .....
...
I `m pretty sure (100% + x ;) )

I like it black under neath and the firewall, looks better over time if you plan on really using the vehicle, especially a black fire wall. It will hide the dirt and grime that will come with a running engine.

 Oy, with the expert blanket statements.

Early firewalls were black including the insides of the front wings. When they changed over to body color, which they did, I do not know. You have pictures prior to the disassembly, it's pretty evident what you had. Destin, ultimately its your choice. ;)

X2 on the same color as the outside buddy. All of the cruisers I have owned (or seen for that matter) have been that way. The only times I have seen that, like previously posted, is when the po added it (65 and up though)...I say stay with the same color under the hood brother, but up to you. Looks great man. Cant wait to see it back together as well. Now, go have a  and be  while you are dreaming about :steer: your new rig.

All my cruisers have been the same color on the firewall as the outside. Man that thing is beautiful!!!!

I just checked my 62 fj40 that still has factory paint. Firewall is green to match the body. Under the fenders and rear wheel wells are green, but had a black undercoat sprayed on them, likely from the dealer not the factory. So my 62 fj40 has matching color under it and on the firewall. When I am done it will be black. I want to drive it not clean the firewall and wheel wells all the time. Road tar and grime will really stand out on that red paint. You paint job is very discouraging to me, no matter how hard I work it will never look as good as yours. I cannot wait to see it going back together. Also Destin this post is great information and inspiration as I get ready to start my 62. I am sure you put a lot of though into your choice of black under it.

I think destin should paint it what ever color he likes.

But your not going to convince me that Toyota never painted the firewall and bottom of the hood black. I have eight pre 63 tubs and they are all painted black. Just think how much easier it was when you repainted your early cruiser. You just taped off the whole firewall instead of tearing everthing apart. Which is what I'm sure what happened to the ones that were repainted. Being black you just leave it alone. Why would someone go to all the work of tearing it apart and then paint it black instead of matching it to the body if it was in the past.

Shane the picture you posted is of a 64 or 65. I guess the real question that wasn't asked is what color was it in the past. If it was red then it probably came red from the factory. I'm really not much help on the newer stuff.

I would think the factory always did the bottom as a matching color to the outside for the only reason as to save cost. They could paint the whole thing at once once. If they did black it would mean painting, taping it off and painting the rest.
