Hello All - My '73 FJ40 is for sale in Denver! $26,500.

I've been lurking and benefiting from everyone's knowledge for a few years - the forums have been so incredibly helpful both while I was gearing up to buy and after I took home my (literal) barn-find from Durango, Colorado in 2021. A huge 'Thank You' to those of you who contribute so much time and knowledge and personal experiences to make others' experiences easier.

Still, what I know about Land Cruisers couldn't fill a thimble compared to everyone else on here. I never really had any wisdom to offer so this is my first post.

I pretty casually tried to sell last spring (I wasn't very committed), then decided to enjoy it for a few more months and took the top off for the summer. I re-listed it for sale on Craigslist last month, then on Facebook Marketplace a week+ ago.

I originally listed at $29,5 and dropped it to $26,5 this morning.
I'm actually incredibly surprised by the lack of interest. I bought it for $19,500, probably have $15k into it - and I've spent, what seems like about 100,000 hours of my time : ).
It's a great truck - and it seems like incredible value. Maybe I'm crazy and you guys can give it to me straight. And I'm fully aware the market at the moment isn't what it was a few years ago.

Anyway, I thought that posting here might get it out in front of a better audience. I'm pasting the text of the ad details below, but please click through to the ads for the images if you don't mind. I'll upload here as well this weekend.

Also - I have a very detailed, but not serious, warts list that I had put together for someone who seemed serious. I can forward that if anyone is interested.

thanks everyone!
Jay

Starts, runs and drives great. There are no mechanical issues that I'm aware of and rust is minimal for a 52 year old Land Cruiser.

I just dropped the price by $3000, so that'll be firm.

Thanks!

Nice, wish you were closer, good luck with the sale. Seems like you put a lot into this, why sell now if I can ask?

I agree, very nice truck. Also surprised it has not yet sold. If you find you wish to try…go to Bring-A-Trailer.com and check out a few auctions. The big key is to post 150+ photos. In a week, you’ll probably get the money you’re asking for. Yes, the market for FJ40’s, 45’s,55’s has shifted for now

If I was younger, I would love to check this out for my own garage

A plane ride is cheap. Fly out drive it home. Always surprised at “wish it was closer”.

Or cover my travel expenses, throw me a couple bones and I’ll drive it home for you.

Good point. I've done a few long distance purchases. Both cars and motorcycles. A few epic trips home. Typically of vehicles I know a bit more about. For now, I am concentrating on ones I can see, drive, poke at and learn. There are several of those within a reasonable distance. My point was, I wish this was one of them :)

Looks like this one was in great hands where no poke and learn is needed. The buyer will have a huge head start on ownership based on what is presented. GLWS.

Hey and good morning jhynesrockmtn - thanks for the note. It's only a money-thing. I'm building a little mountain house and it's taking longer and costing more than I'd hoped. I'd rather not sell, but every time I pay the interest on my HELOC, it reminds me to get serious about it.

Excellent. I love CO and lived in Castle Rock for a year back in the early 2000s. If job circumstances had been different, we would have stayed, at least longer. I get escalating construction costs. My bathroom is currently gutted and the checks keep getting bigger. Best of luck.

Thanks for the note @knuckle47 - just out of laziness, I was hoping for a local sale. Bringatrailer seemed like it was going to be a lot more effort - with a lot of uncertainty. A broker told me he'd handle it completely for a flat $1200 and that didn't sound too bad. But he did mention that there would probably be a queue and a wait for an FJ40 slot (which made sense), and that they frowned on reserves. Then, yesterday I was looking at @jomelo 's classified for his '72 (beautiful!) and there were several comments about the fickleness of BoT. But thank you! - that's probably where I'll turn next.

I have used them for 4 different purchases and 2 sales…I do not see that as a seller…. You supply them the details and backup photos, set YOUR reserve and check a few times a day for bidder questions….7 days later …IF IT MEETS reserve you get the wired funds, send off the title and let the buyer arrange for shipping… in my case, it was painless….6 times too

Good luck…looks like a nice truck from the 1 photo

Agreed. It is what you make it to a certain extent. Lot's of photos, be prepared for questions, some stupid ones. Read through a ton of FJ40 auctions to get an idea of what everyone asks for and put that information in there out front. Same with pics. Just get the ones everyone asks for and put them up. I see sellers get frustrated with newbie questions or statements that aren't accurate. Just be able to answer quickly and honestly. Be open to folks coming to look during the auction. You don't have to accept their "no reserve" stance. I suppose they could tell you they don't want it, but your sales price is fair, I'm guessing a reasonable reserve would be fine. I've sold 1 and bought one on BAT.

Great information - thank you both

@jhynesrockmtn yep..great advice. Also @Jfrandall take videos…post them on YouTube or some other app, and give BAT the links. Once you look up a few FJ40’s that were listed, you’ll get the idea. And again, your price is realistic unless there are issues not yet revealed and you can lower your reserve during the auction if you feel you’re wanting to sell it whenever you’d like. It also takes a few weeks to get listed while they create the poetry that goes along with the listing

Hey love your FJ40! i'm in boulder, but have a 1.5 year old toddler and mostly in charge of watching him since my wife works so much more than me :) Would you consider showing me the FJ near boulder sometime? i'm pretty open, just hard to make the 1 hour drive each way. my wife is very interested. We have three LC's of various age and use, but she loves the look of the FJ40 and would like to check yours out. thanks!

Hey @akgerman - thanks for the note. I remember the toddler-days well. I don't have any plans to be near Boulder any time soon and I don't have the time for a dedicated trip but I'll definitely make myself available if you (or she) happens to be around Denver in the near future. It would be great for it to stay in Colorado - It's been here since '73. Thanks again for writing - if I can share any info, please let me know.
