Finally getting to work on my new truck, John S added a new cat back exhaust but there was a bad leak from between the two manifolds. I used this as an excuse to buy the two piece MAF ceramic coated header, naturally! So we had at it this morning and got most everything off, and after consulting John decided a full de-smog was in order. He had already installed the pump delete pulley and he included a Jim C carb prepped for the delete so I did some research here and began removing the intake rail, the EGR equipment, and the metal vacuum spaghetti.

I'm stuck now on what else to remove. I see a bunch of valves on the list to remove but confused as to which ones they are. Also I'm not sure what to do with the pipe that comes off the exhaust downtube and into the mess mounted on the drivers side fender.

I did order the MAG EGR block off kit for the intake manifold and plan on getting some allens to plug the intake rail holes

Please look at the pics and provide any insight you may have!

Thanks

Holy s*** do I have a far better appreciation now for you folks with smogged trucks. Holy insanity to wade through all that. My desmogged truck looks like its floating in the engine bay for all the empty landscape around it!

I'm in the middle of a desmog and resurfacing my manifold so I know your life right now. My build thread is in my signature line so you can see a lot of pictures and my steps there. It's not complete but I think I'm one step ahead of you in the process.

Here's a couple things I would think about doing:

  • There's a document online called "how to desmog a fj60." It's extremely well written and has everything laid out for what you need. I've read it at least 20 times and each time I do things make more sense.
  • Get those vacuum lines out if there. Pull things off and it will be a lot cleaner to look at. You'll need new vacuum lines after you desmog anyway so get them out.
  • It looks like your egr and egr vacuum pump is still in there. That will definitely come out.

Some of those valves on the driver side fender are hard to tell which is what. I've looked again and again at that document I referred to and it has helped. Also, download the emissions FSM and it can help.

Good luck in this! I'm in it with you. Keep us posted on how it works out.

Thanks for the replies, yes it is a confusing mess but reading all the desmog guides on mud and the emissions manual I'm starting to make sense of it all. I found a really good guide on a desmog that leaves the high altitude compensator on and I think that will get me through it. I took the downpipe and entire EGR pump (I think that's want it was) assembly off of the fender, but left all the electrical vac switches attached to the truck on the drivers fender. Trying to separate what I'm keeping from not, in the last pic I have a few switches etc that I think stay on. Need to order new manifold bolts and then hardware for the heat riser and EGR blockoff on the header. EGR block kit for intake is ordered already from MAF. Also need the air intake plugs. Thinking also that I need to make a new power steering pump to reservoir tube connect now since it is just hanging out in space now.

Still feel like I'm in the weeds though!!

Made some progress, got the air intake rail plugs, intake mani plugs and EGR blockoff kit from MAF as well as a new BVSV 1 since I destroyed the original getting it out. Got the intake painted and everything mounted so yesterday the headers and intake finally went on! Making the little half washers to account for the less thick manifold plate took awhile. Ordered nice new manifold bolts while I was at it.

So today I'm planning on mounting the carb heat shield, carb and air cleaner then get to work on running the vac lines. Super pumped for that :/
Not plannning on running the HAC since we are at 7000 ft here anyway.

A couple of questions-

-Do I need the carb heat shield with a Jim C carb and headers, or can I trim it down to just the spacer block?

- I have no idea where the heat riser hoses go since MAF did not send instructions. Can someone please explain and add some pics?

I'm sure I'll need more help but I have the emissions and desmog guide printed out to get through it.

I would maintain the heat shield at the carb. Deflecting heat from the carb is a good thing..

Regarding the heat riser, your're referring to the block off plate that supplies engine coolant to the intake manifold where the exhaust used to mate? there is a hose that originates from the top of the engine, back driver's side and routes to the heater valve. remove this hose, the new hose routes down to the manifold plate, then a second hose routes back up to the heater valve. I made a plate out of aluminum and to brass elbows with barbed fittings. You can buy them somewhere, forget.. but sound like you may already have one.

I used the MAF headers as well.. rather than using washers that can get lost, I used a micrometer to the measure the thickness of the intake manifold then machined (ground and filed) the steel exhaust manifold to match the thickness exactly. A bit tedious, but this insures they torque evenly across. Very pleased with the results.

Hope this gets you further..

Heat shield and Jim C carb on now-

Normally the gas filter is used to provide manifold vacuum to the distributor vent VCV. You could run a T off the AC idle up source (the small tube coming off the brake booster port) and pull it from there I suppose.

Is the gas filter port the one I have plugged that you circled? I just plugged that because I see it plugged in the MAF pic. I could open it back up to use for the distributor vent.

Thanks for the pics on the heat riser hose routing!

You got it, circled...the three prong deal is the gas filter.

Cool and plug the other two holes then, or are they used for something? As for the backwards VTV on the carb, I think that's the way the PO got it back from Jim C, not sure though. I can flip it

Yeah, the other two will be plugged unless you're keeping the HAC or the choke opener. I see you're only keeping one BVSV though so no choke opener...plus just noticed the choke opener diaghragm is removed

Any of you guys doing a complete desmog...message me here on the forum. I'd be interested in buying an entire smog setup.

Moved to the Republik of California with my desmogged '79 40 and tossed the parts years ago... :bang:

@LakeNorman_FJ40 I hate to ask but what made you move to Cali? Did you hit your head or someone poisoned you and the antidote is here? Best of luck and post up what you need maybe I have spare parts laying around.

To those that happily Desmog their vehicle please do save all your parts for those that may need them in the future. Thanks in advance.

I won't need my smog setup so I'd be willing to part with it, minus the carbon canister and possibly some other things. If I ever move I'll just do an LS swap!
