Hi Dan
Great looking truck and it just makes me want to start tinkering on mine but have to resist the urge until have the $$$ to start and do it properly.

Keep the information coming as I will follow your lead.:D

Many thanks for an informative thread,

PTO winch is coming. PTO gearbox is installed and I've cleaned up the Thomas winch. I just need to fab up a new mounting frame for the winch, buy some cable, make a lever for operating it, source some new unis for the shaft and modify the driveshaft to suit the Toyota PTO gearbox instead of the Thomas gearbox it came off. I'll get there one day!

On the weekend I took off my bezel and sanded it back to bare metal. Looks like it has taken a hit in the past as the PO used a fair bit of bog to smooth the bezel over after some really rough panel-beating on it. Sprayed it with primer and then a couple of coats of an "off-white" colour I found, and I reckon it turned out ok. Looks more like a 40 than before anyway.

Now I want to fix the rust in the bottom of the bib, remove the LED lights the PO fitted and paint it the same grey as the rest of the cruiser.

I also recently hit my local Toyota parts lady with a list of part numbers and was pleasantly surprised with what she could source. Of course i was surprised with the price, but buying some of this old genuine Toyota stuff is an addiction in itself!

Some pics to come....

Looks great !

That radiator cap is for a Cressida/Camry IIRC but you just trim the inside "blow/suck" pipe a bit shorter ;)

PTO woes

G'day Dan,

You don't happen to have the HJ47 PTO hanging around the shed gathering dust?

I have an '84 HJ47 and spent $350 buying a really nicely rebuilt PTO and last night went to fit it only to find that the holes don't match up. I suspect I have an early non-split case unit. Damn and blast...........

Cheers,

Ben

Here's a pic of some OEM parts I picked up a few weeks back.
Genuine hood latches, B diesel side-cover & rocker cover gaskets, RH tail-light lens, washer nozzle, clutch fork boot, a few assorted rubber cushions, stainless 8mm screws, heater outlet pipe joint and some kick-out vent seals. I was really surprised with the kick-out vent seals. I bought some non-genuine ones from Cruiser Corps last year and had them shipped to Oz, but Toyota has them here and they were only $18.84 Aus each! The tail-light lens was cheap too, only $21 Aus. Annoying I could not get a LH one also though.

I also finally tackled my springs. I removed the bottom two leaves out of each spring pack. I assume they were added to make the springs heavy-duty as they were not clipped in at all. Just undo the centre pin nut and they fell off. :) Cruiser now rides heaps better. Still a bit bumpy, but the bone-jarring stiffness has gone. Shackle angle has come away from vertical slightly, and it made a huge difference. I knew i bought my compressor for a reason. With air tools it was a piece of cake and pretty quick. Wish i had done it two years ago!

Decided to lift the rocker cover and check/adjust the valves. A couple needed minor adjustment, but nothing to dramatic. Look like a bit of moisture must have been under the cover as some surface rust was developing on the rocker shaft and some of the locknuts. It cleaned off easy enough, but glad i checked.

New OEM seal. The one that came out i'd say was the original one as it was fairly squashed.

New seal sits well.

I love the little details Toyota put into it's parts. Check out the detailed TEQ and Daihatsu stamps inside the rocker cover. Cool.:)

Couldn't resist giving her a bit of a shine-up with some fine sandpaper.

And then I drove the cruiser for a bit to roll the speedo over. Hey, it's brand-new again!

66.webp

Really it's only 200,000km's. Really grateful for the old logbook i got with this. The original owner recorded everything that was done to/or spent on the cruiser from 43000km's onwards. Makes for good reading with a beer!

Not much been happening on the 40 over Christmas and the New year. I've sourced a new roller fairlead from Gears and Winches down in Brisbane, who were originally Winch Industries, the manufacturers of the 8000lb winch I have. Just waiting for some funds before i pick it up and then the PTO project will take off again. I've got the steel at home ready to fab up a cradle.
I was hauling some pavers a few weeks ago and the LH front tyre tube blew out on me about 5km's from home, so had to get that replaced. Changed out the engine coolant and also the perished rubber boot on the 4wd selector shaft.

The best thing that has happened though is I now have a new cruiser chick in my life. :D The cruiser has not been driven much this month and I've been deprived of some sleep, but she is worth it. Pretty chuffed! :)

Congrats on your cruiser chick!

Sweet ride - you're a lucky man ! Congrats on the find

Been a while since I checked out your thread Dan.

Congratulations on the addition to your family!

So Toyota in Australia wanted only $A21 for a taillight lens when my New Zealand dealer wants $NZ60-70! (Always knew we got ripped off bigtime here!) I recently smashed one and felt financially-pressured to go "second-hand" to get my genuine Toyota replacement. Even then I paid as much (actually - I think it was 50% more) as you did. Grrrr. Still .... at least my replacement has "patina" and yours doesn't. Ha ha.

And if I bought a new one, then I figured (with my OCD) that I'd have to replace BOTH to get matching "lack of patina". And I certainly couldn't justify spending $120 simply on taillight lenses.

Still on the subject of the financial costs associated with our obsessions .... These days I find I can sometimes make things (like kick-vent gaskets) from modern materials (that didn't exist back when our 40s were made) and both economise AND exceed OEM quality.

I know the thrill of opening up Genuine OEM packages  ... but you may find you have to lean my way what with the costs associated with a raising a young family.

What a kill-joy I am eh?

Well actually I feel it is my civic-duty to try and curb your clearly out-of-control purchasing activities ... (particularly when I'm expecting no similar "prezzies" to arrive on my doorstep!)

OK. I'm jealous.

Thanks for the congratulations guys. :)
Tom, your right about the OEM parts addiction. I probably won't be able to make a big purchase like that for quite a while now!

Well, I picked up my new roller fairlead yesterday and started to make the new winch cradle today. I used 75x75 5mm angle and it will be mounted to the front chassis rails with three HT bolts each side. Do you guys think that that will be ok? The cradle and winch together is going to be a heavy mo-fo!

Pretty pleased with some of the beads I was laying with my little inverter-arc welder, especially because I haven't been welding often, since about 10 years ago.

I have to drill more holes, finish welding and trim it up a bit, but hopefully it's all done by tomorrow arvo.

........I used 75x75 5mm angle and it will be mounted to the front chassis rails with three HT bolts each side. Do you guys think that that will be ok? .....

Well I use just TWO 12mm bolts each side Dan. And I don't even worry about whether they're HT or not.

I did however thicken/strengthen my OEM bumper around my front pair of bolt-holes. (The other two are in the thicker chassis rails.)

And I don't think my bolts are even close to being the "weakest link" in my setup. (Shearing four ordinary 12mm bolts like-a-guilotine would take considerable force!)

The way I see it, other things would break (with hopefully my winch shear pin being first), way before I'd shear those 4 bolts.

One step closer! :D
Finished up the winch cradle today and put the first coat of paint on her. Going to put one more coat of flat black on tomorrow morning then bolt it up. I'm really happy with how it has turned out! :)
