Been planning this for a while now.... so I started this evening. I'm REALLY liking it! I plan to make mini-sliders that look like my actual sliders I made a few years back. But this time the slider legs will only have to come straight out. I'm also gaining serious ground clearance as evidenced by the other side of the pics.

Anyway, my issue. How do I get around the pillar in the pics? From the looks of it (hopefully the pics will show) the outter part of the pillar can be cut since the inner part is what is tying to the lateral brace.

Where is the threads of others cutting... I've seen them... gimme links!

PS: the tail pipe will be cut at about the frame rail too!

here is where you can really see where the inner panel is tied into the lateral support, but not the outer vetical brace.... if I could trim the outer brace about 2" higher I would be free and clear to do what I need to.

So now since I've heard from Kirk, I think I'll leave the pillar as-is and close up everything like he did and then just use 2x2 tube instead of 2x4 tube for my mini sliders... won't match my current sliders exactly, but close enough I guess.

Looks great. Someday I plan on doing the same.

Why not weld the 2x4 or 2x6 directly to the sheetmetal/body to cover up the hole? Or is that what you are talking about?

Reminds me of my cruiser. Same color. I don't see much of that color around here. All I see are White 93's. That color looks the best IMHO. Other than Yellow with Black Trim

Not a good idea to connect the body and frame directly with metal. VERY loud noises, vibrations, etc. I've got some sheet metal to weld into the hole. Then just going to rattle can it or something. Thinking of getting really stupid and OD greening all the brown part.... but that's another thread.

I've decided the frame extending out is just like a slider. but i might be able to be convinced to cut it:)

Is that Heckle in the background? Or a straight dude?

u butcher u........

Here is mine. https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=164456

I need to update, cause I have since added a slider/tire carrier spindle. I plan on having a swing out that will span all the way across to the other slider. I will be trimming/cutting the rear crossmember to accomodate the added depature angle.

I like.... so any notice of fatigue in the pillar? or is it still very stable? You went higher than I am/need to go. Looking at mine... I went too high I think, oh well, a rock will take it out anyway.

What gauge did you cap the pillar off with? looks beefier than the rest...

chop d frame

chop it

now

If for no other reason than better departure angles. All the kewl kids are doing it.

I just see no reason to chop the frame... I'm looking for protection and even though the last cross member sticks out too far... it acts as a buffer from trees, rocks, etc. I've used it that way, and if i chopped it down, it would have been my tailgate and not the bumper. That's why I am keeping it for now. I have no plans to make a bumper back there so i need something. If I do cut it.... it will still stick out farther than the tailgate, so I'd be moving in about 3". We'll see.
As far as departure angle goes... I see the center as being fine to drag. I'm most concerned with the corners.

neat!

is the rear cross-member strong enough for recovery points?

Always have been for me! I have very large grade 8 washers behind the nuts and try to use both recovery points when I can to distribute the load. When I'm a hurry, i just wrap the strap around the cross member though.

Before my custom tube bumper/rocker protection was made, I cut 4" off the frame rails and welded the crossmember back on.

I still had tailgate protection.

We will bug you to no end until you cut that frame!
