Has anyone done the new cummins 2.8 into a Prado yet? My 1990 may need a swap and that Cummins would be the dream. If anyone has done it I need their guidance.

I don't think anyone has done it yet. Would be a perfect motor for the truck though. Do it!

What happened to your 2LTE?

Well it isn't confirmed yet but it seems that some careless idiot named me might have let a lock washer fall into the intake manifold without realizing it... That engine was running great too.

If I do need a new engine I want to go with the Cummins. I just dont know how much custom work will have to be done and what that will cost. I was hoping someone has already worked that out.

Sorry to hear about the washer.

There are a couple examples on here now of 2.8 Cummins in Landcruisers I believe. Would probably not cost much different for the Prado than any other cruiser. All the same challenges really. Certainly not cheap, but would make for a really really sweet setup in an LJ78.

Edit: Have a read through this thread: Cummins R2.8 Conversion build thread

A little later this year and I could have much more info for you. The shop said they could make me an adapter for the H55, they build trophy trucks so have the equipment and skills. Right now it takes several adapters to fit the H55.

I think you need to decide on trans to figure out cost. Right now though the R2.8 is on sale for $7200 which is a great price.

I am interested for swaps into 70's as well as other Cruisers.

Cheers

I’d stick with all Toyota, look into a 1hdt or ft swap, will be comparable cost wise. Remember when everyone was swapping in 4bt like it was going out of style, most are regretting it now. It’s still an untested/proven platform, sounds cool but time will tell how good it really is.

Not into Prados but into 75 series Landcruisers. Highly electronic but great little engines, which produce more power than a 1HZ engine. Adapters are an issue at the moment, however more options are being made each month. If you want a new engine for a transplant this is definitely a nice option. Finding a good used Toyota diesel can always be a bit of a gamble.

So what was wrong with the 4BT? Apart from being noisy and I suspect a little crude, I would have at least thought it reliable.

I have been told that spare parts availability for the R2.8 is an issue should anything need to be replaced.

Price drop is probably because Cummins isn’t selling them as they thought they would.

You would have thought correctly. The 4BT & 6BT will be rattling on for years to come.

I think most of the Jeep Wranglers are using the AX15 Transmission, so that may be a more proven route since the adapters are already available and no need to invent the wheel so to speak with R151s or H55, etc. Although, someone with invent that wheel soon enough I suppose.

The landcruiser platform is not designed to damp the noise and vibration from bigger ,torquier engines. A few years back English owners of v8 petrol Rangerovers were putting in old truck diesels when the price of fuel sky rocketed and they virtually made their vehicles unsellable on the used market.

Anybody have any new info on the Cummins 2.8 into a Prado? My rig is still dead and I'd love to get it back on the road. I have some money set aside to get things rolling.

You have the main component of this swap...$$$$ :D

It’s possible someone, somewhere has does this swap but I don’t think people overseas do this swap as common or if at all. Best chance would be on here. It seems like a great engine but you are pioneering away with it. That said go for it!

Personally, as boring as it sounds, I would either go 2UZ which would be sweet, or VW diesel if you want diesel as the ALH and alike can be had dirt cheap, have swap availability already in cruisers and potentional of decent power and good mileage. Parts are everywhere for VWs.

the 4bt is a real rattle box. Great engine, lots of info for cruiser swaps on that. I think a lot of people dislike them for being loud/rattle/noise boxes. Some don’t mind.

No matter if you do an basic swap, exotic swap, or fix your 2LTE, the big challenge is finding the right person to do it for you. I'd start there.... Don't use the shop that couldn't even fix your 2LTE.

Don't know if you're interested, but I have an 89 2LT that has been totaly gone thru at the Toyota dealership in the Canary islands. To the tune of about $7000. Still in the cruiser so you could hear it run. Have all the receipts. Prioritys have changed so don't need this engine but could make someone a DEAL on it. A good fresh 2LT might save you a lot of time and headaches, and after owning four of them I haven't found them to be the terrible engine everyone else seems to think they are. But I reckon opinions are like assholes....everyone has one. If you're interested give me a call at 931-729-5033 and save yourself a ton of money, time and trouble.

Hey I know this is a long dead thread, but instead of starting a new one just thought I'd throw this here. I was bored and found this guy on Facebook, he's got a 4bt swapped Prado. Seems pretty cool! Never seen any info on it on these forums so thought I'd leave it here.
