Cummins 4bt into my FJ60

That was just a quick video I posted from the place we were watching the football games today (not taken there). I installed the heat wrap on the exhaust under the hood yesterday. I used all 50 feet by overlapping more than the instructions said. It is some pretty good stuff. I can put my hand on it while the engine is stil running. It also lessens the noise in the cab by a bit.

Now for the bad news...I've developed this wierd harmonic at around 1500-1800 RPMs. We can't figure out what it is. I was hoping it was a boost leak in the system, but I tightened everything up and I still get it. I'm hoping it is something vibrating somewhere and not the turbo doing something wierd that will end up costing me big bucks.

Otherwise, every thing is running and driving great. Having lots of fun just breaking my 4btFJ60 in.

Oh, does anyone know how to get more throw out of the clutch system? Different master? Different slave? Whole different system. Both my buddy and I thought the clutch was slipping today.

This may sound silly, but try moving your seat forward or back, or listen from the passenger seat while someone else drives. Sometimes sounds will set up standing waves at a certain frequency, and if your head is in the right place the sound can be amplified, or can pulse if the standing wave is slowly moving about the cabin. You might hear a rapid pulse slow, then increase again as the rpms increase through the harmonic frequency band. This is very annoying at cruising speeds, but can be solved by using sound absorbing materials on the roof and doors to break up those standing waves.

That's very interesting. It doesn't sound silly at all. I like anything that steers me away from the turbo going bad. I will have to have my buddy drive me around in the next couple of days and see what it sounds like from the passenger seat.

Here is a picture of the heat wrap from the other day, as well as a little oil leak that I have on the remote oil folter assembly. I will have to take one of the hoses off and tighten the fitting going into the assembly.

The las picture is just of the rig in the sunshine. Who doesn't like the exhaust like that? I mean really?

And, notice the little symbol below the exhaust.

it looks amazing ...

how it sounds when driving .. well dunno if you had chance to drive it .?

Sounds better now that the heat wrap is on the exhaust. Sounds like a diesel! I have to order an insert to go into the muffler to quiet it down a bit. Don't get me wrong, I love the volume personally, but my passenger gets an ear-full.

How much does your exhaust flex fitting flex?

I would think that it would flex better sideways than in compression and that has to transmit a lot of vibes to the body seeing as the muffler isn't on rubber isolators or did I miss those?

Nice work-

Saweeet! Yep, passenger probably gets all they can stand. Your buddies will probably sit there and grin. Wife---not so much.

What kind of air filter are you using? I picked one up at Advance but I think I need something a little bigger to feed the turbo.

Man o man that looks good :grinpimp:

Thanks man! I went for a quick drive last night to check some things I tinkered with. As I get more comfortable with it, it gets sweeter.

Nope you didn't miss isolators for the exhaust system. Once you get the flex joint hooked to pipes, it is surprisingly flexible. But I think you are right about the sideways and compression thing. When I installed the engine, I had a time constraint issue so I didn't refab the motor mounts on the frame to fit the liquid isolators and disn't use them. I have to go back and install them. Most of my vibrations are coming from the crappy engine mount system I am running right now. The whole rig has a nice vibration to it right now. I call it engine assisted message.

I'm using a K&N I got from Jegs. It's a universal with a three inch inlet. The other end from the inlet breaths too, to get that little bit extra. I will try to find the link for you.

599-RX-2820 is mine I think.

Nice! What remote oil filter kit did you use?

You and Phoenician have matching big red cruisers with 4BT's :)

I used the Perma-Cool remote oil filter fittings. They make a direct fit spin on adapter that goes to the oil filter head. I had to find a dual remote oil filter bracket that then matched the ID of the adapter outlet and inlet. What I came up with has a different thread size than the oil filter head and I am running two small filters (Don't know the original filter size, I'm just assuming mine are smaller). Seems to be working though. I just worry about start up in the winter.

I like your rig, the color and the engine, reminds me of Big Red. Wish i was home. I'm stuck in baghdad international right now waiting on a c130 to kuwait. Keep posting pictures and telling us what works so I know what to mimic.

no, I wish, got some business to take care of for a few days then back to Iraq. I won't be able to come back home until after the holidays.

So what is your driving experience so far, how do you like it?

Hwy cruising speed? Any off-road time yet?

Elbert,

I really like it. Power is great. I still have some nerves that come with a new project and there are some bugs still to work out, but all in all, I'm smiling when I'm driving it. I have a feeling it will be a while until I get everything dialed in though.

I got the insert for my exhaust and t-bolt clamps today. I will probably put the clamps on tonight and finish the exhaust this weekend.

Also, having problems with the clutch. If I start the rig with the clutch pressed fully to the floor, it will rock forward slightly on flat ground. It won't go anywhere, even with my foot off the brake. This would lead me to adjust the clutch in a little bit. But, in fourth gear if I punch the fuel, the engine will start to climb and then take off like the clutch is slipping making me think I need to adjust the clutch out a little bit. I've been pumping the clutch 50 times every day I sart the the engine to get any last bit of air out of it. this sounds like air is still in the clutch doesn't it?
I have the Chevy adapter and flywheel attached to the 4bt. I have a Centerforce dual friction plate clutch (2500lb) with the special throw-out bearing provided by AA. An Advance Adapters Ranger is next and then an H55 tranny. I have the stock Toyota FJ60 clutch slave mounted with the adapter bracket provided by Advance Adapters. Any thoughts?

Please let us know if that header insert actually does anything. I came close to buying one of those years ago but didn't trust it would do much to quiet down my exhaust.

Agreed, I'm very interested to see the effect of that insert.

There is a short and and a long-neck throwout bearing, the slave should be fully retracted and barely touching. I don't know but the OEM one has a spring pulling the arm back so it is off of the clutch keeping the TO bearing from spinning all the time and the AA kit I bought didn't have any type of spring at all. I think it is interesting the 2f TO bearing is about twice the size of the chevy stuff.. The clutch slave can be tricky to bleed so make sure there is no air getting in or fluid leaking and your flex hose is good and not expanding either.. Ask my kids about "Press-release, Press-release"- two people make it go a lot easier and I shut the bleeder off before the clutch pedal is released so air doesn't get sucked back in.
