Cummins 4bt into my FJ60

Where is the video????

it's coming. I have had to do a couple of things I was putting off during the build. I will get a video soon.

Couple of issues: could I have put the hoses to the steering box back on in the wrong order? I opened the steering reservoir tonight to add a little fluid, and the return hose was shooting the fluid so hard into the reservoir that it splattered out everywhere and even with the cap on it is going so fast that it is airating the fluid. Suggestions?

I had to put cardboard in front to the radiator because it is getting cold here. That seems to keep the engine right at 180.

I'm not getting any heat in the truck, I will have to check to make sure I got those hoses on correct.

I got the tach calibrated tonight. And I checked the speedometer against one of those road side signs that tells you your speed. With 35" tires, 4.58:1 R&Ps and an H55 tranny, my speedo seems to be right on. That's an unexpected plus.

This thing is geared low. I'm driving around with the Ranger in High all the time. The stroker didn't have enough to do that as effortlessly as this 4bt. I'm thinking I need at least 4.11:1 R&Ps, but I will continue to check out what I have for now.

All in all a fun truck. Not very warm, but fun. I can't wait for the break-in period to be over to see what this thing will do.

Stevo, that truck of yours is going to be scary!

Congratulations!

It's amazing what these engines will do. You can't explain it, it has to be experienced. I got used to the noise pretty quick. I have sound insulation and it's still pretty loud but I don't mind.

It's a good idea to stick to short trips for a while until you shake out the little bugs that will inevitably rear their ugly little heads. Great job! Time to kick back and throw back a few :beer::beer:

How is the return set up for the hydroboost and power steering, if you have the "tee" in the wrong orientation it could be effecting the fuild flow causing turbulance and aerating the fluid.
It should be straight thru for the return off of the hydroboost and the line from the box coming in perpindicular to it.

If the tee is correct you might want to look into brazing another return into the pump to reduce the fluid velocity or just increase the size of the return into the pump.

I can't wait to get my truck done, and with all of the others cummins swaps finishing up ahead of me its amping me up for what I can expect.

I don't have hydroboost. I have a vacuum pump for the brakes and a steering pimp for the steering (Wonder where I got that from?). I have a line form the steering pump to the steering box and a line from the steering box to the cooler line that runs across the front of the rig and back to the reservoir.

Both of the lines connecting to the steering box have hard flaired, fitted ends. Those two can't fit into the others threads, can they? And, If I put them in the wrong places, will that allow the steering fluid to be pumped through the steering box faster?

Mine is just like yours. I did away with the cruiser cooler line and just put an after market transmission cooler in the front and ran new lines. My cummins had the power steering pump on it and since I had the whole donor truck I was able to pull the lines out with the motor. It actually had return written on the line.

See if this photo is what you have. The really curved line(closest to block) is the input to the steering from the pump on mine.

Yeah, that basically looks the same. Which is the input on the steering box? There are two holes on the steering box, one on the passenger side of the box and one on the driver side of the box. that is where I think I reversed them. But, I thought those two holes had different threads. No?

P.S. Man that is a good looking engine. Very nice!

Hopefully your steering pimp can keep those hose in line...

No tech on this one. Sorry. Glad it's running well for you!

Did you forget to put oil in her? LOL

Sounds good and healthy and the reverse snorkel is growing on me too!

Enjoy.

That was just a quick video I posted from the place we were watching the football games today (not taken there). I installed the heat wrap on the exhaust under the hood yesterday. I used all 50 feet by overlapping more than the instructions said. It is some pretty good stuff. I can put my hand on it while the engine is stil running. It also lessens the noise in the cab by a bit.

Now for the bad news...I've developed this wierd harmonic at around 1500-1800 RPMs. We can't figure out what it is. I was hoping it was a boost leak in the system, but I tightened everything up and I still get it. I'm hoping it is something vibrating somewhere and not the turbo doing something wierd that will end up costing me big bucks.

Otherwise, every thing is running and driving great. Having lots of fun just breaking my 4btFJ60 in.

Oh, does anyone know how to get more throw out of the clutch system? Different master? Different slave? Whole different system. Both my buddy and I thought the clutch was slipping today.

I love it :D

Thanks Johnny. Wait until you get yours going. You'll love that even more.

Got the oil in her. Used John Deer break in oil and it will be time for the first oil chang in a week or so.

I knew people would come around on that exhaust. It's not finished yet. I will be adding to it when I get an insert to go inside. A little sound mitigation don't ya know.

On Saturday I also put new bearings in my belt tensioner. Turns out the pulley is not square and I had to shim up the whole assembly to get it straightened out. Seems to be working now, but I will keep an eye on it.

Would this not be called a .... ToyCumsA?

The oil comment was a joke about the Cummins rattle.

Weird rattles can drive you crazy, when I did my swap, someone told me to just drive her a few hundred miles and let everything settle in, just watch and listen for big things, then go over the whole thing and sort out the little issues.

Looking and sounding great Wyo! Just keep driving it. I hear all kinds of sounds that were about to drive me crazy. Now I just consider it totally appropriate for what I have.

I also did the wrap on the down pipe and loveit. Saw some high powered diesel shop in Colorado on tv yesterday doing 1000 hp setups and that's the same thing they did. Makes you feel like you did something right when the high dollar big boys copy what we are doing!

Did you stay with your mechanical fan or did you do electrics?

I have an electric fan. Won't need it again until June, and I won't know if it works until then. Things are getting cold here, fast. I already have a piece of cardboard in front of the rediator.

Glad to hear from two people about the strange noise thing. I'll tighten a few other things tonight and drive it to see if it is just something that is vibrating loose. I hear that is a problem.
