i know this is a never ending question but how well do you think cruiser axles would hold uo to 40 inch tires? of course not even close to stock bobby longs hub gears fine spline pinions bla bla bla. i hear they seem to have a problem with spinning off pinions? any info would be great thanks:grinpimp:

my FJ40 diffs have held fine...

front is the latest Longfields with hub gears....stock COARSE spline 4.10 pinion even :) - trussed, knuckle balls reinforced, 6-stud knuckles, etc....all the stuff... I did shatter a Long in January, but that was 4-5 years old...nothing lasts forever (and no, I've never busted a coarse spline front pinion....)

rear is stock FJ40 4.10 fine splines, welded, with stock minitruck shafts (yeah, I finally broke one in May)

39" soft Pitbulls

mini truck shafts? centered cruiser diff i assume? what engine to you run? are you heavy on the throttle at all? i didnt think i was goign to go that big of tire but thinks happen

Kling-on runs 39.5" grooved boggers on his FJ60 truggy with longs up front and polly rears.

Yup 180 to 1 crawl with the Marlin crawler ... I killed 6 stock axle the first year and have gone 3 yrs on the Longs and polys a I have a stock 2f I don't think I beat on it too hard but the guys in my club say I do now I brake tcase but I ru old school 3spd case. I have 2 Runs on George tcase brace and beat on it harder last outing the I ever have before.... So far so good... Even thinking of goin 42's now

I don't back out much....ie: Lonestar Jambo 2009...3 hours into the first day and I gutted a Longfield, busted the tail off the 700R, cracked the D300 housing, and junked a rear driveshaft...1100 miles from home...

I'm notorious for breaking things...and my rig gets wheeled as much or more than most any other out there :)

And yes, a hybrid centered FJ40 rear running 85-older used minitruck shafts :)

(see my sigline for details...it's all there)

After you have upgraded everything I am sure the weak link is the rear axle shafts. Broke a few myself on 37's, hell even broke 2 at the same time once. Sputnik on the board runs cruiser axles built to the hilt and has been thru a few Poly rear axles shafts, he is running the most demanding tire there is though (39" red labels). Which shows the weak point (rear axles shafts).

The easiest way to figure out if it will work is... Location + Driving Style=

I also think the tire matters as much as wheelin style, weight of rig, and available power. EX:

a 40"Toyo MT weighs 112lbs:mad:
a 40" BFG MT weighs 80lbs:clap:

those are both for a 20 inch wheel but still

thats a LOT of difference in unsprung weight and all contributes to how long before it will fail at some point......just sayin

seems that it can be done, i dont want to dump anymore money in these axles than i already have, at the moment i will be running a 350 chevy sm420 and stock 3 speed case. im not super hard on the throttle so i think it should work out ok

They're is video of me at Tree's ranch hittin turkey run with all for wheels off the ground after the 4th try my buddy told me to pull the winch;)

i've been running 40" iroks for about 3.5 years now with no major breakage until this year when i broke a short side rear axle shaft and then a front pinion.....i attribute this to gradually driving more aggressive (or stupidly) as i built up confidence in what the drivetrain could handle

I think built Cruiser axles would be fine out west, here on the east coast - tend to break when hammering loose, sloppy hill climbs. Albeit - have a friend with 40" MTR's who when aired up slightly (say 12 lbs or more) has hammered plenty on stock rear axle shafts with no problems - and I mean bouncing and getting on it hammering...

Front axles are pretty stout when built - went thru birfs, hubs (part rotor bolts to) and knuckles. Recently had a minor problem with a Long - bought a 3rd and will send the original in with $40 to Bobby to R&R. Ran a course spline pinion with an ARB for years - never a problem with it. Currently have cryo'd 4.56 fine spline, same old ARB (almost 10 years old), 30 spline longs, BL chromo hub flanges, 6 stud knuckles, 4x4 labs high steer and 1 ton rod ends, new stock knuckle studs, hubs drilled for 6 larger dowel pins, trussed for a ram. Pretty stout axle - going to an FJ60 and need to add those gussets.

Rear - 4 broke pinions (one entirely my fault for improper set up), broken stock axles, one shattered Poly long side, one severely bent and twised Poly long side, just pulled a slightly twisted short side and along with a busted carrier pin - which roasted the carrier and an old Lock Right.

I run 39" Red Label Krawlers - and think it's worth the hassle, as it was the only truck in our group to walk up Boat Ramp at Chocco several months ago - but I just can't hammer it on loose, steep hill climbs - great for the rocks, if that is all I wheeled I think it would be worth a few breaks here or there to keep it.

Pics of how Poly's tend to break (even with twisted splines - I've not broken one at the splines yet) and latest damage.

Tweaked carrier and lock right, part of the rear axle trophy wall of shame, and slightly twisted short side Poly.

Would anyone here run that short side with the minor twist in the splines - the busted and bent long sides had more twist, and never broke there???

Wow Sputnik, with your collection of broken parts I think you're on the right track upgrading your rear to a 14 bolt.

What is the size of the pinion on the 14 bolt?
I have been looking into building a 35 or 40 spline 9", however with the gears i want to run i can't seem to find a gear set with a pinion larger than 28 spline.
I may have to run gears other than the 5.29:1s i want to.

X2 .. ;)

And who with big ( relative today ) meats ( more than 38" ) run stock hub gears . .? ( locked for sure )

you know everytime I hammer oo it I think about the fact that i have stock hub gears :bang:

and I never seen it on the web I'll ask the guy who filmed it if he has it some place

I'm running 40's on my 80 series axles w/ Longfields front and Polys in the rear. It's all about weight, the lighter you can make your rig the more stress you can put on your axles.
