so since it seem alot of you running 40s or so are still running a cruiser case, with a case saver anyone seem to have to many problems and which case do you run?

really depends on how you wheel. I also wheel with sputnik40 and i have 1 broke short side. umpteen hundred birfs. 1 rear pinion. and i run 33" tires.

I run 40s, twisted off a couple coarse spline pinions in the rear and that is all for axle damage, cruiser t-cases were my Achilles heel. Got rid of that junk and put a atlas in along with a taco rear. So far, so good. Oh, my front housing is had.

Would anyone here run that short side with the minor twist in the splines

No, I would not.

You have it apart, and know that it is junk waiting to fail....

Sputnik on the board runs cruiser axles built to the hilt and has been thru a few Poly rear axles shafts, he is running the most demanding tire there is though (39" red labels). Which shows the weak point (rear axles shafts).

is anyone out there running 37" comp tires on their cruiser? just wondering if the axles would hold up any better with a little smaller sticky tire?

for what it's worth i believe that iroks are the lightest 40" tire- according to interco's site they are 11 pounds lighter than my old 38.5 sx's

i'm using a 3-speed case with t-case saver and nose cone saver....it's holding it's own so far

I'm runnin a 70's 3sp case in mine, I started with JT outfitter top brace and still popped out my nose cone now I have George (orange45) nose cone saver so far so good ....I let y'all know when I find the nexted failer I think it'll be the hub gear or ujoints

Back when I still had rrooved 38.5 TSL/SX's on double beadlocsk (heavy) I rebuilt a 4 speed case with 3 speed gears - all new parts and bearings (sans the hi/lo shift fork), t-case saver (from the guy that originally made them - not the cheap copycats) - behind an SM420 and the case held up fine.

I believe it's currently in TurnMeOver's 40 still going strong - and he's bashed plenty of other drivetrain parts, but I think he's trading up this month ;-)

As far as the one piece cases - I think they do better when they're fresh and built with the stronger 4 speed cases. Older brittle or high mileage cases = bad.

you know everytime I hammer oo it I think about the fact that i have stock hub gears :bang:

I upgraded my stock hub gears...at the same time I replaced a broken Longfield

I ran a '72 FJ40 case with an Amway saver for quite a few years...never broke the case, but did twist off the front output shaft (cone was unscathed, shaft ohly)

I got pretty good at the early-gen Newfields and 33's...too good actually...swapped then out for a used set of welded-ring Longs (with 38.5 SX's)

My current 39's are 'stickier' than most tires....thus far, a stock 85ish mini rear axle is my only breakage...and considering those had been in the rig thru other breaks, I'll wager they were already weak.

Honestly, unless you are gona drive like a competitor, the Longfield stuff WILL hold up and at a great price.

longfields are seriously the least of anyone's concerns with these axles...

i was just wondering in Sputniks case since he is breaking the hell out of everything with those 39.5 red labels if 37" reds would be a little friendlier? you might come out with about the same or better axle cleareance with 37's w/LC axles as with 39's and a 14 bolt
