Time for a quick Moab report - I will get some pictures posted here in the next few days - too busy wheeling!
Everyone is having a great time. Larry and Juan did Kokopelli with three days on the trail and two nights camping. The 200 appears to have come through unscathed.
Matt and I did the San Rafael Swell area near Green River - beautiful! And not nearly so "populated" as some of the Moab-area trails are getting.
Yesterday was Hell's Revenge for me, and we had a fair amount of carnage. A guy with a huge built 40 blew up his transfer case and front driveshaft, spewing ATF all over the trail - time for the spill kit. A couple guys running Hell's Gate were not able to keep straddled over the chasm and ended up sliding the passenger tires down to the bottom. One guy in a very nice 80 was able to drive out of it, but busted his passenger side mirror when he fell in, then scraped up the side of his truck driving out. Another guy in a 1990 4Runner with a malfunctioning front locker also fell in and needed to be winched up. Amazingly, it appeared that scrapes on the rear bumper was the only damage for him - he got lucky.
On the way out, I was spotting some of our guys down a ledge when a side-by-side ATV that had inserted itself into the middle of our group flopped onto its side about five feet away from me. Luckily, the driver was able to keep his hands and feet inside the vehicle and no one was hurt. We winched him back up onto his tires and he drove it out of there.
It's all fun!

This FJ-43 was built by The FJ Company. You may have seen their ads in Toyota Trails. They use all Toyota components and build about 20 rigs a year. This one had the 4.0 liter V6 like Toyota was running in the Tacomas recently, along with a manual transmission (not sure if it was a 5 speed or 6 speed), and a transfer case with a real shift lever, not a switch on the dashboard.
It was very nice. So I have decided to sell my house and buy it.

I gotta tell you, the best way to do CM'18 is from the passenger seat. On top of that, a 200 pass seat is the ONLY way to go. Didn't even spill the mineral water while doing obstacles on Hell's revenge!!!! Next year, I might just ride with someone from ABQ since my 80 never moved from the campground this year. Thank you Larry for letting us ride along and for entertaining us the entire weekend.
I went over to the Kane creek CG Sat afternoon but only saw @cruiserdan and nobody else whom I know. Most folks already started to depart by then and @Romer just left before I showed up.

Lessons learned: for the IFS rig, it makes sense to cut up a broken/used CV shaft right at the bell so that one can drive home in 3wd if needed. Larry limped off the trail with everything intact but axle let us know that it was broken and unhappy.
The axle nut on any IFS rig has a huge role in that it compresses the front hub and bearing together, 200+ ft-lb of torque. So, once you break a front CV shaft, you can remove the CV shaft from the hub but you MUST leave the "cup" still inserted into the front diff. If you take the entire CV shaft out of the front diff and the front hub, you will lose all diff fluid. The modified bell can replace the CV shaft back inside the hub, along with the axle nut so everything is happy and tight. Lock the CDL and you can home happy in 3wd.
Taking the front CV axle apart (similar to a birfield) was comical at best and at the end, Matt/Larry had to cut the bell with an angle grinder at a Moab shop.
Speaking of comic relief, I locked my keys in the 80 so had to call AAA for locksmith service. The dude broke a sweat trying to unlock the door. Apparently, you can't use a slimjim in the 80 and it's very hard to steal. Who knew?
