CB NO LONGER A REQUIREMENT

Some more planning considerations.

Vehicle maintenance- tow rig, trailer, Toyota
You know the deal. You can’t plan for everything but you know your rig and travel days can be harder on rigs than trail days in my opinion. So start ensuring your junk is ready to go now. Again, you can’t plan for everything and we all understand that but by getting your rig ready it def lowers the risk of breakdowns.

Spare parts - tow rig, Toyota
Again, can’t plan for everything but ideally you know what spare parts you need to bring.

Spare tires - tow rig, trailer, Toyota. With ability to change tire.

Tools- bring basic tools for your junk. Some of us with more room will more likely be carrying more tools.
My plan is to bring a few more tools than I usually bring and of course you are more than welcome to use them.

Recovery gear- vehicle recovery points, a strap and a way to
Attach it x 2 at a minimum. I will be bringing additional recovery straps that we all can use.

Camping gear- you know what you need. A suggestion is that we don’t have all carry the same crap all the way there and all the way back.

For example. My camper has a stove and I will also have the black stone griddle that everyone is welcome to use. I will also be bringing the big ONSC canopy for some shade of it doesn’t interrupt the club using it.

Communications /Ham radio ?!?!?- I am going to put in the effort to get my ham license before the event. Maybe you should also, but it is not a requirement unless the cruise Moab event staff require it ( I will confirm). There really is no excuse to not test for the dang license and I am as guilty as everybody else for putting it off. Either way you will need an ability to Communicate for the event. Also, in case of an emergency the cell phone coverage is sketchy at best out there on some of the trails.
This is a great start. A few other points of interest

Bring what you need to get you off the trail, there are wrecker services with beastly flatbeds, they will cost an arm and a leg but will get you out

There are a few parts stores in moab itself, and they can get you pretty much everything and fast for a price. They also allow you to use them as a shipping destination if you have to ship that rare 80 part that is NLA from your buddy cletus back home. Make sure to leave him a key to your parts stash back home :-)

There is an airport there, if the significant other does NOT want to drive with you for 30 hours, you can pick her/him up.

Water! holy crap do you get thirsty. The grocery store is a little overpriced, but there are a few shops like the mountain biking store and others around town that offer free filtered, i filled up my jerry cans.

If you do need a shop, be prepared to wait. I sheard my leaf spring centering pin and rachet strapped the hell out of it to get it to a shop, they were quick and honest. I thought it was a lot worse than it was, but it ended up being a Pin. Charged me for about an hours work and kicked my ass out

Dont miss out on the breakfast places, i know most want to cook their own stuff in the am, but there are really nice small cafes that add to the charm of moab.

Register as soon as you can and book your camp site, esp if there is a group. Sucks if you are late to register and have to camp way the hell on the other end of the site. The "camp sites" are essentially RV pads or single "stalls" and they go fast. Some choose to camp all week out side of town, just dont be late if you do, they dont have much patience for waiting around, i think its a 15 min grace period and you get left.If you want to rent a house with a garage, there are a bunch available just outside of town. Comes in handy if your s*** is perpetually broken and you need somewhere to wrench.

Man this is making me wanting to go back. This year is not in the cards, but soooooooon

I havent been to Moab for cruise Moab, but have been out there twice, here are my travel tips:

If you have not gotten groceries already, the grocer in town is a bit on the price side, from the route of NC to Moab, it looks like you drive through Grand Junction CO, I would suggest stopping at Walmart there and loading up on what you need.

This Bakery has good box lunches:

Zax Pizza is pretty good, hard to go wrong, outdoor seating too!

If you want to give that mountain biking thing a try, double down bikeshop would be one of the good shops, others being chili peppers or poison spider

What was mentioned above, drink heaps of water, it seems to just disappear in Moab :D

Edit:
Once your are out of town / in canyons, your cell reception will go to 0, just plan accordingly :D

If I flew in, would one of you guys bring my tent and all my camping s*** with you. And would you guys let me ride shotgun randomly and not leave me for dead in the desert?

In return I would pay for beers/food and be bringing a pro Nikon setup to capture all the fun.

Beuller?….. Beuller……;)

I spoke with some of you about this trip over the weekend. I will post up some of the topics of discussion here so that everybody can benefit from the info discussed.

Concern #1: what if the group wants to do harder trailers but I don’t feel comfortable/ don’t want to/ can’t, do those trails?

For those of you that have never been to GSMTR. Let me explain how it usually works with a large group. We all, ONSC AND USC camp together and in the morning the big group usually breaks up into smaller group based on destination or trail they plan to run. It will be the same way for CruiseMoab, plus when you sign up for CruiseMoab you have the added benefit of signing up for what types of trails you want to sign up for. So even if you are the only one out of our group that wants to do a particular trail, you won’t have to do it alone because you can go as a group with other attendants of the event. By the way even if I am not riding with any of you at the time. If your vehicle had any issues at any point and you couldn’t make it off the trail. I would still come help, and I am sure most of us feel the same way.

But here is the best part. Just like when we go to GSMTR, at the end of the day after all the groups get back off the trails we can still all sit around the fire and have a great time. Which in my opinion is one of the best parts of these types of events.

Concern or topic #2
Do I have to tow?
Is very that is going towing?
I want to drive my rig there.

Bottom line with any of these questions is this. Get there however you want. Nobody is going to dictate to you how to get to MOAB.

There are pros and cons to both. I started this planning thread this far out so that you can start your necessary planning on how you want to get there.

If you own a tow rig and a car hauler you will need time to get not just your trail rig ready but also your trailer and tow rig and that usually takes more time and money. The added benefit is obviously that if your trail rig has catastrophic failure then you are not as stressed to have to fix it because you can still get it home.

There is nothing wrong with driving there to the event. I have driven my 80 to go wheel in California and Texas several times. Once I lost a front driveshaft and another time I lost the ignition. But both of those times I was still able to get home.
The advantage you will have if driving your trail rig there is this time you will be doing a long trip with other folks that have your back if you were to have any issues. As opposed to trying to do this trip on your own. Obviously if you drive your rig there you will go knowing that you still have to make it home so you will drive your rig accordingly but again even if you come prepared you can’t for everything. And if a situation were to arise that was completely random or just bad luck. Again, you will have some help. Even if it is going to the parts store to get you the part you need or the one tool you don’t have. Etc.

Topic #3
Lodging
Above is the link to the info that rising sun provides for the location of the event. Basically it is open camping in the fairgrounds that you do not have to reserve. They do have rv spots there I guess but those do have to be reserved. I will reach out to Rising Sun club and see if I can get some more details.

My plan is to camp in the open area at the fairgrounds where the event is based out of. If any of you want to rent a house for the week or want to go camp on BLM then you are more than welcome to. You do not have to camp at the event if you don’t want to. Feel free to do your own lodging coordinations if you like.

While we are on the subject of lodging. The way my travel plans line up, (leaving Friday the week prior to the event) it is looking like I will be in Moab 2 or possibly 3 days before the event starts on wednesday. So I might have to figure out a place to park the tow rig and trailer for those couple of days to go out and explore. More likely I will find a spot on BLM land or see if the fairgrounds will let us in a couple of days earlier.

Topic #4
Movement to event and back.

I have a feeling that the “convoy” there might end up being broken down into 2-3 groups depending on departure times.
This is still up in the air and should iron itself out as we get closer to the event based on when people can take days off and on their particular work schedule.
And like I said before. If you just want to travel there and back by yourself that is cool too.

I hope that by providing as much info on this event thread that it allows club members to make an educated decision in planning for this trip. Also, to try to convince those club members on the fence about going. I will continue to do monthly updates all the way to departure time as needed.

I just remembered, Dave had a real great idea. He mentioned driving up to Salt Lake to visit the landcruiser museum.
This is something I am considering since I will be arriving a couple of days before the event.

Date changed:

Yeah I had already updated the dates on the first post.

FYI

If you go to the cruise Moab website you can get put on their email list to get emails when there are any important announcements.

According to the email I got last night. Registration will open up on February 01,2021

Just a friendly reminder. Cruise Moab registration is tentatively expected to open in 24 days on or about 01feb22. So you have about 3 weeks to decide if you are going on this epic trip.

Please, please, please!! If you are set on going on this trip be sure to be prepared to sign up as soon as registration opens since I don’t know how fast the event fills up.

Also, a few quick questions. Would those planning on going and getting to Utah a few days early. What would you want to do?
Would you guys be interested in seeing other parts of Utah?
Possibly doing a 2 to 3 day “overland style” trip from southern Utah to Moab on dirt?
As mentioned before go to SLC to the landcruiser museum?
How about spending a day at arches national park?
Ride trails in Utah in an effort to do as many of them as possible?

I know for me I try to take advantage of my trips out west and usually plan for more than I can do in the time I am out their in the area but rather have more to do and use my time wisely. Than to get their and not have a plan in place and waste time figuring out what to do or where to go.

This topic is open to discussion. And I am certainly open to ideas. I have a route almost completely done from Mexican hat, monument valley or lake Powell to needles district to beef basin to Moab. This route would be mostly on dirt through some beautiful country.

Nathan and I are seriously considering doing this trip. Our plan is to trailer the 80 out there. I'll set up my pickup truck with a bed rack and drop my RTT on top of it for camping on the way out there and back and while at the actual event. We are open to going out a few days early and traveling wherever the group wants to go. If we will be doing trails prior to the actual event, I will need to bring a ground tent and I'll have to come up with a place to park my tow vehicle with RTT on top and trailer. That might be a problem, or it might not. All I know is that I won't want to do trails in a pickup truck pulling an 80 on a trailer! Looking forward to this trip. I know it will be epic. I just hope I can make it happen. We will see....

I would be in the same boat as you guys if we decided to check out other locations in Utah but I’m sure we could work some sort of solution if need be.

I would love to be doing this in my sequoia, been dreaming of it for years. Sadly I think family health issues will be conflicting.
