Your question says all you need to know.
Clearly you got it figured out. Go for it! I'm sure you have plenty of time, space, and $$$ to make that nag a stallion. 'cause it's gonna take lots of each.
I totally got it...
My assessment is not as rosy as Patrick’s. The fact that the truck has 2 pictures of it from a time when there was measurable snow and it is snow covered tells me there is a lot lurking.
While the metal in the ‘78 tubs is 16ga as opposed to the later tubs that were 18ga, it didn’t make them immune to rust issues.
Ask @TRFCSUX how much bondo can be hidden on such a relatively small tub... I still have flashbacks when I get a whiff of burning bondo from a sanding disk.
Also, the engines ARE relatively bulletproof, there is still a lot there, plus all the mechanicals attached to it that can be more problematic than a simple front wheel drive Civic. Rear main seals, clutches, drive shafts, pinion seals, etc...
Ask @1MOA about what can go wrong with a “simple” FJ40 and how $$$ it can get when you are just trying to make it a “wheeler”.
All this is not to say it isn’t worth a look. I’d check out every FJ40 ad, if I could, just ‘cause I love FJ40’s. However, there is a lot to consider before jumping into the vintage 4x4 game.

I'm just shocked that Richmond still has snow.

And as far as best strategies, I think you mentioned before - “buy an 80”

Thanks. Points well taken.

Still a great option. But so is just having enough ready cash to pounce on the right 40, or other, as soon as find it. That reminds me...I need to check my 70-Series fund...

Are you able to park a third vehicle where you live? Any HOA to worry about? Any fear of theft? Also remember that insurance might only give you a few hundred dollars if it's stolen or wrecked unless you're able to meet the storage and use requirements of the better policies.

Side note: Does VA offer an "Antique" registration that reduces the vehicle tax, puts conditions on the usage, and possibly changes some of the insurance voodoo?

VA and DC have antique plate options. Im trying to clean out and rent this spot in the alley behind my place. Not sure how safe something would be there. Would likely want a car cover on it at least to avoid theft and an awning over it too...

As does MD, one can register plates as Historic or Hot Rod. I went Hod Rod.

Cool spot! I could see putting a cool flat metal roof on the spot. Parking it there would be FJ40 abuse and not to mention the pain of lugging tools.

I’m not sure if this is a security feature or just a big issue, but there is no way on earth to get a trailer back there. You could get a trailer on the other side of the brick but not around that corner

Are you in Georgetown? I might be interested in renting the space if I end up going back to work there (we are closed due to the virus). The garage fees were getting out of control!

Nah man... thats my secret spot... Ill let you know if it becomes available

That's a HELL of a security feature! Well, it is if they can't get it started. That'd be quite the multi point, manual steering, man-powered push/pull maneuver for anything less than a small army of devoted thieves!
Uh, push it? Easy.

We'll disagree on this one. Look at the angles. And it wouldn't happen quickly.
Come on... it’s DC brother. Your time away from the combat zone has made you complacent.
3 guys would have that on the trailer in less than 5 minutes.

Ahhh... Next you'll tell me that DC doesn't have a Stand Your Ground law? ;)

Anchor some hold downs deep into sunken concrete pillars and chain down axles and/or frame rails and augment it with a battery powered motion sensor, or an inductance loop, wired to a hidden siren. :stop:

I bet Ed would love to design that!
