Well I decided to give the STTs a try as I hear both good and bad. I also got agreat deal and it was either buy 3 good tires that everyone raves about, or 4 tires that depend on who your talking to.

I figure sipping would benefit so looking to see if anyone did it.

OK so here is my 2yr. 25,000 mile review.

I have (5) 285/75/R16, I have rotated them approximately every 5,000 miles although I have been slacking lately and have not rotated them in 8,000 right now.

I still have quite a bit of tread life on them (7/16"), have not lost any chunks or had any sidewall issues. I have had them on all types of terrain from sand at Superstition Hill in Plaster City and out in the Oyster Shell Beds in Ocotillo. I have also had them out on the natural slate in Death Valley as well as the beaches of Baja. These tires have done the job on everything although I try not to aid down past 18 PSI and normally air down to 21 due to the known weaker sidewall.

So that is my update so far and feel free to ask me any questions. Here are the pics below, and to see the full album showing how much lift the 285's gave me click here: Cooper Album

[Coopers, dispite the advertising, still have a very bad name in Oz. I'd never buy them again and everyone else I've spoken to says the same. BFG or Micky T's, at least they don't fall apart climbing rocky hills.[/quote]

Funny, Cooper owns Mickey Thompson as of 2003.

So your Cooper's personally fell apart on your climbing a rocky hill?
So are you recommending the BFG AT's or MT's and the Latest MT's or the old MT's that were around for so long.

From my personal use with documentation of everywhere I have wheeled them I would absolutely buy the Coopers again.

Mark, thanks for the update. How is the noise level on these tires?

The noise level was so quiet and nice "For an MT" but it has gotten noisier after two years which was to be expected. Just last month I was rolling along side a Jeep with MT's at 65mph on the fwy and mine were much quieter than his. My guess for the MT's he was running would be Good Years but hard to tell at that speed.

I got mine used, 37x12.5-17, the two on the rear are older (no DOT code), almost worn out, they have pretty good chunks missing. The newer pair on the front have little chunking and they have been on the same trails. My normal air down is 14-16 psi, have run them as low as 12, depending on the trail. Overall happy with them and will not be changing brands when they are replaced.

Any comparisons that may help me?

I didnt read every single message on this blog but I am curious if anyone has switched from a 37" toyo M/T's to the Coopers or Visa versa and if so what are your thoughts on off road traction on dirt, rocks, mud, snow, as well as durability. I know the smaller sizes are similar in many ways but I'm curious if the same is true in the larger sizes.
Also, who has the best deals on 5.29's for the front of my locked 80. Mine are in need of replacement.

Thanks guys!!!

I got a set after reading this post almost a year ago and have been happy with them. I have the small 31x10.5 but they seem to balance well, decent on the highway and haven't had any strange wear problems or falling apart while climbing.

I'm looking at the BFG KM2 or the cooper stt's. Any experience from anyone that has run both? The KM2's are about $70/tire more than the Cooper STT.

Chris

If you can afford them I would get the KM2's they are a nice looking tire, not sure people have put enough miles on them to give an accurate opinion.

An update on my Coopers, I just got them rotated this week before a long drive I will be making this weekend and I am now at 165,000 miles I bought the Coopers in Oct of 06' at 130K and I am just hitting the suggested wear marks. Now I am just hoping they will hold out another year so I can step up to 35's once I get a lift.

Oh and just a note I have been rotating between 5 tires so that has helped towards the longevity of them. I just can't understand not using a spare, how can you trust something as a back-up if it has never touched pavement. Just My 2 Cents.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I did finally chunk a Nob or two off of one of my tires. But I was not aired down on the trail like I should have been. I think this was the rock that did it. Lockers would have allowed less skinny pedal to get over this.

So 5 years and 3 months of proud Cooper ownership and it's time to start thinking of replacing. I now have a 2" Iron Man lift so the 285/75/16's are looking a little small.

So I want to keep my stock 16" rims but I don't want to go with an even wider 315/75/16 tire. I think the 285's are wide as it is especially since I don't have Tupperware flares.

So looking at the size list I am thinking about the 235/85/16 to get the height I am looking for and a skinnier tire. Do you think this tire will mount OK on our 8" wide rims? The other benefit is that this 235/85 is a 'E' rated 10 ply tire instead of a 'D' rated 8 ply like the 285/75 & 315/75's. In comparison to BFG's & Toyo's the coopers have a much weaker sidewall so this would give me a stronger side wall. Plus this size would save me $30 a tire x 5

I run STT 235/85/16 on my patrol in oz. It is NOT as tall as a 285/75/16....

Good tyres, been through a bunch of stuff and no issues with sidewalls/staking/chunking etc. Lots of miles on gravel roads at speed and through tracks with fallen (sharp) branches etc.

The patrol is a SWB but has quite a bit of armor and lots of camping junk so still a heavy vehicle.

If you want a taller tyre because the 285/75/16 are looking small, the 235/85/16 certainly are NOT going to look bigger...

cheers,
george.

235/85/16 will be quite a bit shorter than 285/75/16. 255/85/16 would be about the same height as your current tires. Personally I think the 33" tires (285/75 or 255/85) look great on an 80 with a 2.5 inch lift... I may consider 255/85 for my next tires, or maybe I'll get the bug to go bigger.

For my use, terrain, wouldn't want anything stiffer than D rated and don't carry enough weight to need it.

 Totally disagree, I would rate the STT much tougher than BFG, don't have much trail experience with Toyo. I have given them a bit of abuse.:hillbilly:

George,
Thanks for the info guys, it must be that weird tire equation where the height is a percentage of the width that makes the 235/85 shorter then what I have.

Ben
Only problem is that Cooper doesn't offer a 255/85/16 they have a 255/75/16 but it's a 'C' rated 6 ply.

Kevin,
WOW, you really are due for some new Rubber!!!!
I too have never had any issues with the sidewall of the Coopers, I just recall comments about the sidewalls being weaker when I bought mine. It's probably on page 1 or 2 of this thread :meh:

Compare the tire weight of the BFG to the STT and makes you wonder where the difference is. My suspect it is in the sidewalls since I have run both. FWIW
