any opinion on these tires in off camber situations?

ive been running a lot of trails lately where i feel like im about to slide off the mountainside but of course i have some lame worn out pro comp mud terrains

I've done a few nasty off-camber's with mine at 15psi. I wasn't worried about my tires. I was, however, worried about getting my seat cover out of my butt without any stains.

Well I have had mine less than a week but I am very happy with my decission. I had decided to go with some All Terrains but when they ended up being priced about the same as these Coopers I decided to step it up and get some Mud Terrains. The hum starts in around 45 mph but never gets any louder. Today infact I was cruising to the Chargers game with the windows down going 70 on the Fwy and my 4 friends were all surprised how quiet they were for MT's. I have found that with the window up you only have to turn the stereo up a couple notches to drown out the hummmmm. Oh and I got over 1.25"....

Thanks and yeah i know what you mean man. Friday and Saturday I really got my heart going sliding sideways towards a tree with no control. If i push on the gas i would just slide more and even with brakes i was only going downhill.

I really think im going to buy these tires. Its between these and Super Swamper Truxxus MT. I just really need the ice/snow traction and i think these have the advantage. i hate sliding all around town with a little bit of ice or going over a cliff

Well it sounds like the top three are:

Goodyear MTR
Cooper STT
Toyo MT

my neighbor has the STT's on a diesel Dodge Ram and he thinks they are pretty loud...i am very interested to hear many people think the STT's are not that loud...I have been partial to the MTR's as of late just b/c of the track record and how many rigs here have them but they are $$$ and the Toyo MT's are even more $$$$$ from the prices i have found and this is what makes the STT attractive but in the end an extra $30-$40/tire is not that much for how much you will spend over all...

I hope people can keep commenting this is very interesting.

Dang, too bad they are 17 inchers.

Why? You don't like the 17 rims?

I'm thinking about 35x12.5R17 in the Black Steel FJ Cruiser Rims (7.5x17) for my FZJ80 with OME J.

I've looked at the 325/80/16 it is an attractive tire in that you can stay with a 16" rim. I'm running the Toyo MTs. The sidewalls are awesome. I don't even have a scratch in any of them and Idaho Lava rock is excellent at tearing tires up. I have one friend who is running the STTs. Our local tire store begain pushing them when they couldn't get any more Toyos. My friend does not like them. He runs them on a diesel Dodge. He's had problems with balance. Personally I think it is his wheels. I've run Coopers before and I've always felt their rubber compounds were a little softer. This can be good or bad depending upon what you want out of a tire. I'd go with them if they were cheaper than the Toyos, that bigger size really interests me.

But... What's the problem with that?

I'm thinking about the black steel rims of the FJ Cruiser... They are 7.5"x17 in a 35x12.5R17 STT set...

Well, I'm about to give these the green light now. My tire guy said he'd flat out beat anyone's price on them, too. So...for those of you that have gotten them in a 315/75-16, what kind of prices have you gotten?? Any help would be appreciated.

The school of thought that I've heard behind wheel size has to do with how much sidewall you have for flexing over rocks and other obstacles when off road. 10" or more of sidewall is supposed to "ideal" although I'm not sure who decided this? lol So if you run a 17" rim then ideally you should have a 37" tire to keep the 10" of sidewall for off road use.
Just my .02

5 tires
$1100 bones

Thanks. Anyone else?

I am going to pull this old thread back up. I have 35 Stt's (just bought) and plan on sipping the tires. For those that ran the tire, hae you done this and if so, how many slits did you put on the center lugs? Have you found sipping improves traction on rock (for this tire, not others) or is it not worth my time doing it by hand in 98 degree heat sitting on a garage floor?
Slickrock.

I didn't sipe mine. I can tell you that they grip everything like mad but with that comes a price. I have about 9k miles on them and have left behind some good sized chunks on various trails.

Dunno about the cat's meow but some people over here think they are the duck's nuts!:flipoff2:
I don't have any experience with the STT's but had some 31" S/T's a while ago on the 80. They were brilliant as an A/T tyre but I found that if used hard on rocky ground the weight of the 80 would cause the tyres to chip badly, in fact one of the tyres completely lost one of the side lugs! I see that Cooper now make the ST/C so the chipping problem must have been known about. Does anyone know if the STT's share the compound with the old tyres or the new ST/C's?
BTW, a lot of outback tourers use the Cooper A/T's but everyone I've talked to about them reckon they just bought them because of the Cooper reputation, but they haven't had a good run out of them (puncture resistance, wear, grip, etc.).

I had the same issue with the ST's on a slippery, rocky hill climb. Lost 20% of the side wall lugs, ripped off or torn, and a side wall cut in one tyre. Mate had STT's, did the same climb and had similar damage. The third 80 had BFG Muds and didn't even get a scratch on them. All of us were running the same tyre pressure 24psi.

Coopers, dispite the advertising, still have a very bad name in Oz. I'd never buy them again and everyone else I've spoken to says the same. BFG or Micky T's, at least they don't fall apart climbing rocky hills.

Were they Discoverer STT or Discoverer Radial STT? (both are radials)

A couple of my previous posts in other threads:

The "Discoverer STT" is the agressive tire with 3 ply sidewall, very similar tread pattern to the Toyo MT. The "Discoverer Radial STT" looks like it is bsically an older M/T style tire with no siping

They are radials, that's the confusing part about the names, both the "Cooper Discoverer Radial STT" and the "Cooper Discoverer STT" are radials. I assume they are phasing out the "Radial STT", as I can't understand why they would have nearly identical names for different tires.

They were the Discoverer STTs. I do know of several people on LCOOL who were sucked in by the hype and gave the STs and STTs a go and all swapped to BFG or Mickey Ts within 12 months. I can't repeat the langauge they use when ever Coopers are mentioned.

On the other hand I also know of a few people who put them on to do the trip around Australia without doing any "real" 4WDing and they raved about them. However they only drove on well maintained dirt roads and didn't do any harder stuff.
